It is not that the metal impeller is coming off the shaft necessarily. There is also the failure mode where the pump bushing fails and allows the impeller to move enough to collide with the block. I had this happen on another 928. That one is really fun, you get steam, noise and belt tension warnings all at the same time!

Bill, a rebuilt from 928 specialists has always come with a plastic impeller. Whether or not 928 Specialists may also, now, no longer be offering rebuilts I don't know.

You can also order a rebuild through a Porsche dealer (like Sunset) and it will also come with a plastic impeller if it is a Porsche rebuild.

I just replaced my WP............it was a Porsche version with a metal impeller.

The replacement is a new Laso, new version..............time will tell.

I changed the pump for 2 reasons;

1) I was losing coolant sometimes, not much but enough to be of concern.

2) I had no idea when the WP was last changed

In retrospect there's nothing wrong with the old pump............I was losing a/f through a bad seal on the water bridge. To make matters worse I broke one of the bolts during the project that in reality wasn't required.

No matter what vendor you get them from, check to see if the water pump has any axial play on the shaft. I know that Roger checks them before sending them and a few from each source have been sent back for that.

DR still shows rebuilt units for sale as well as new Laso or new Porsche. I forgot that Porsche sells rebuilt as well as new, so thanks for reminding me of that.

I'm due for a belt/wp replacement and I'm debating whether to replace the wp as it seems to be fine. Perhaps I'll see if I can detect any play in the shaft and make my decision then.

I know wp's are to be replaced with the belt, but if its working fine, perhaps leaving it in is a viable option.

And I've got the porkensioner waiting for install at that time. Oh yeah baby!

Supply all the pumps and until recently the rebuild was the biggest seller.
Laso is by far the number one seller now.
I still sell the rebuild but only after explaining all the options to the customer. Fine for an older non interferance engine.
Practically nobody buys the Porsche due to high cost.
Sold two Porsche rebuilds in the last 6 months.
Sell about 2 to 6 Laso a week.
About 1 or 2 rebuilds per week.

Sean is correct as I check the WP both visually and physically. Not unusual to find shaft movement. Also bad machining or placement of the pulley on the shaft.
I also do not like the early style that has been modified by machining to the later style.
