Default Fuel Pump Relay is Hot, Fuel Pump is Buzzing

Hey guys,

'88, S4, 5sp. Is there any significance to my fuel pump relay feeling unusually hot - after a 1 hr or so mellow drive?

None of the other relays felt anywhere near as hot as the fp relay.

I had a no start sitch, but swapping out the fp relay has fixed that.

My fuel pump is also buzzing, and I wonder if these things are related.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

Well if your fuel pump is buzzing that suggests it may be failing and may be drawing too much current -OR the FP relay is causing it to buzz due to poor connectivity...

Given the fuel pump relay is a cheapie on the S4+ I'd just replace it (swap) and see what happens - if the buzzing goes away it was the relay - if it stays - sounds like the pump needs some R&R or replacement...

I was also thinking your pump is drawing too much current. Maybe a clogged filter? Is the pump getting hot also?

As Alan suggest, a poor connection would also could cause problems. Even the ground connection.

Default Strange lamp glitch(s)

85 Euro:
Car has been completely taken apart and everything is working "But".
1:
The Bremsmitch lamp I think means stop lamps comes on when started and goes off when brake pedal is pressed. When I place the car in gear it comes back on not sure what is causing this. I did have a bad stop lamp and replaced both but no avail.
2:
Interior lamps will turn set to door position and door is opened. When I close the door or trunk lid the overhead front and center lamp glows dim, I believe I may have hooked up the wires incorrectly. If anyone has the correct color wire connection to the lamps that would be helpful. One caveat is that the wires in the center hatch have been replaced due to melting from P.O. so I do not have a point of reference.

Thanks guys, you're thinking along the lines of what I was thinking about it possibly drawing too much current. The fuel filter and pump is about 1.5 yrs old so hopefully its not either of those.

I ordered up the relay today as well as a few other parts, so I'll monitor the situation when I get the new relay in there.

Thanks,

Ed
