I think there is at least one shop in Hawaii that has a few 928's, but I haven't found the old thread/post/email/pm I remember them from.

Default 18 years in Hawaii and no rust!!!!!

Now that is an amazing thing! No coorisoin or evidence of rust anywhere on the car? And its been on the island for 18 years! In just a month just about anything with steel begins to show rust here. Says a lot about the quality of the car and Porsche's galvanic process back then. Great news Karl. Looking forward to some pics.

Lots of paint issues, but no sign of rust starting anywhere. No undercoat or special treatment either.

I should probably rename this thread.
Updates so far:
-still no corrosion found
-flex plate had 2mm bow in it, end play on release was about 0.010"...I think I am ok here.
-p.s. rack leaking, no surprise there. I think I will try rebuilding it myself this time.
-both cam covers leaking, so surprise either
-drivers outer cv boot bad

Next up is to check the timing belt tension, then I can actually drive it a little bit. I won't want to drive it much before the cam covers are done, though. I'll probably hold off on the belt replacement until I put a porkensioner in, since new belts seem to be streching these days.

I am apprecaiting rennlist more than ever. I know the OBs pretty well and already knew how to do most things prior to finding rennlist, but I still have lots to learn on an S4. Time to go do a search about what all I have to remove to get the timing belt cover off.

Great info Karl. I may be over you way in the next few weeks to visit family. I'd be happy to lend a hand on a weekend morning if you need one. Would be good to meet you and the car.

Too bad the Super Ferry no longer runs between Oahu and Kauai. I was looking forward to bringing my car over every now and then. Would be such a pain to use Young Bros or Matson. Too bad these sharks can't swim.

Karl, If you don't have it you should pick up Jack Kelly's timing belt guide off ebay.

Hey Dan
I am thinking that at some point I will pull the motor, to do the valve covers, rebuild the ps rack, and put on a porkensioner. Maybe we could coodinate a weekend and you could come over. Would be a good learning experience I am sure. Gotta get the motor back in the OB first, though.

Timing belt tension was fine. 80% on Kempf tool. When I first checked it it seemed loose, then I realised I was not checking at TDC. Came back this morining, rotated it to TDC and checked again and it was right where it should be. Don't know if motor position makes that much difference on tension, or I was just at it too long last night and screwing up. Thanks to folks here for the procedure on how to do this without removing much of anything.

Went over the paint carefully with polishing compound and carnuba. Still looks pretty grim but something like 50% of the issues turned out to be paint splatters and rubs that rubbed right out.
