As for this economy... How is it I can't get $25k for my GTS with a fresh motor, transaxle, torque tube, suspension, and supercharged. Crazy... Hey, I have a possible trade on a convertible. Working the wife on a no cash deal.

Joe's is a great question, and it made me take my 928 blinders off for a minute and do some Autotradering over lunch. For $25K, one could land an '04 or an '05 E55 with 470 hp, a 400 hp '02 or '03 M5, a 405hp '04-'05 Z06, etc.,etc. There are more than 50 E55's, 65 M5's, and 200+ Z06's for sale within 200 miles of where I sit. (Not that I'd trade either of my 928's straight across for any of these, but there are a LOT of performance bargains to be had right now.)
The auto industry peaked at about 14 million new car sales and is now looking at 10 million/yr (hopefully....) for as far as the eye can see. Too many cars, too little money = cars worth less....

Rob - I did the same thing awhile ago when I began looking for a 928. I have a friend in the car biz who told me I was crazy thinking about buying a 928 when there were/are so many outsatnding performance cars on the market that have more power, ready parts and service, are less than 5 years old, for the same money.
It comes down to this, for those that know about the 928 but have never owned one, there is the bad press regarding reliability, safety, unavailable parts, etc. (whether true or not it is the rep) and that alone scares off most potential buyers. Those people will drop into an E55, M5, etc. and feel good about it. The prospective 928 buyer is someone who is emotional about wanting one of theses cars. That is a very low number of potential buyers. I doubt there are many new 928 owners who just randomly decided to search out this car. Most, if not all of us, have some sort of personal history with the car previous to our ownership of it.
It pains me to look at Joe Dyer's GTS languish in the for sale section. It is for all intents and purposes as great value, but to whom? That'd be us. To anyone unfamiliar with the 928, unless you were some super wrench, you'd run away from a car that has been so heavily modified. So that means Joe will find a buyer/trader somewhere among the Porsche family I suspect. FWIW - I have been drooling over that car since I first read about it here. Would probably have bought it some time ago but, not being able to get it smogged in CA where I would keep it and not having the original induction/exhaust bits to return it to stock for the biannual inspection prevents me from thinking about it beyond fantasy.
Tough economic times, exclusive enthusiast/collector car = few buyers.

The people who know the 928 best are often the cheapest about buying one. Unique exceptional cars aside, if you read the forums and track the market a few months most people learn two things;
Cars of all levels of quality are selling at all time low prices.
928's are not cheap or easy to keep in top condition.
IMHO the only people paying fair prices are those with casual knowledge or new to the market and/or the forums. I am currently "not buying" a car I would love to have that has to be worth close to twice what it will likely sell for. That is the currently reality.

Mike's right about this, Joe...
You would seriously be better off to add onto your existing garage; do the 'canopy' idea I had earlier for the minivan or put the 928 in a 10x20 storage unit and take it out on weekends.
In these tough economic times, it makes no sense to take a financial hit on your car by selling it.........
..........just to keep a minivan dry?
You've got to be kidding me... if I didn't know better, I'd think it was an April Fool's joke.

Barry, I'm not the one with the minivan, but the wife has a Moutaineer. Ha!
You're all right about the economy and the great values of some nice cars. It's a real shame and I'm just happy to still have my job. Wife's been out since November and doesn't care to even look, which I support. I just want a change. My GTS as you can imagine left a bad taste in my mouth, going through original engine builder for almost 2 years, then DEVEK for another year to get right. I long for a convertible having sold the Harley too many years ago.
We'll see. I have a possible trade working with someone on the list. Hopefully, we can make this happen and keep the "other" white car in the family.

I can personally attest to how difficult it is to sell a 928 in this market....as always 90% of "advertising" is price....condition counts...but price is king....which is why we've seen very nice examples trade for unheard of low prices just a few years ago (think GTS for $19-25k)...or the prisitine 94 stroker GTS 5 speed for $31k...that would have been $50k a couple years ago easy

Many of us were probably hoping you would just build a bigger garage and keep the 928... or tell the women folk to get over it!
