Default Loosen Brake Booster: Need new gasket?

Hey guys,

''8 S4, 5sp. I'm loosening up the brake booster so I can install the clutch mc.

Will I need to replace the gasket on the booster when I tighten it back up? If so, I would need to remove the booster completely to get the new gasket in there, so PLEASE tell me I do not need to replace that gasket.

Thanks,

Ed

Which gasket do you mean? The one between the booster and the brake MC, or the booster and the firewall? If you mean the latter, I didn't replace it when R&R'ing the booster while doing my clutch MC. Of course my motor is still out so I don't yet know whether I FUBAR'ed anything with the brakes.

Yes, should have mentioned, the one between the booster and the firewall.

I'm going to button it back up and see how it goes. I'll report back, but may not be for a few days.

Thanks Rob.

i cant imagine its all that important. I would think its there only to keep moisture which is inside the engine bay outside of the footwell. Obviously if its there and intact thats good, but if its slightly perished, i cant think that it would be incredibly harmful really.

That's what I was thinking, but just wanted to make sure I didn't miss some obscure 928 specific rain dance or something that I had to do in order to make this job work.

And holy mother of god, getting that freaking clutch m/c in there - a freaking cage match! My forearms are wasted, covered in scratches. Not to mention the whole body pounding I took while working in the footwell.

Next up is the dreaded bleeding and teeth gnashing/hand wringing hoping that my bleeding goes ok after installing new clutch mc, line, and slave. And new brake mc, lines, and pads.

Keeping my fingers crossed and sending my prayers to the 928 Shrine wherever it may be.

Thanks, I've had that one bookmarked and printed out, along with a couple of others in prep for this job.

But I couldn't get the clutch master installed with the hardline connected, so I had to piece it together as I installed it. It all worked out fine though as I seemed to have been successful with the bleeding (burped the master which I think was the key). The pedal feels firm.

I won't be able to fully test the clutch until I get the S4 running, but I'm pretty confident I've got it bled properly.

The brakes are a different matter. Got everything installed and bled, and I think there's still air in the lines. I get good pedal pressure, but the pedal doesn't offer any real resistance until its about 1/4 of the way through its travel.

Once I get it running, I'll drive it a bit and cycle the abs and see what happens. If I get no love there, I'll get together with the PacNW's finest and bleed again and see how we do.

And there doesn't seem to be any issues with the brake booster, it re-installed fine, but again, I won't know for sure how its doing until I get it running again - I'm assuming. I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks for the help. -Ed
