Foolishly contemplating a 928. Pricing?

I drive about the same amount of miles/year and on average I'm spending about $1500 /year on maintenance items including labor. Now if I add the cost of trying to achieve cosmetic perfection I'm not sure how much time/money I have into it but I enjoy it as a hobby and its relaxing for me.
The car looks really good in the pictures. I would confirm condition in person and also review all records in detail. Get the list of maintenance items from the seller and include the shops that did the work, that will make it much easier to determine the actual value of the car. For example, if the car has maintenance up to date and was done by a well known mechanic (that does good work) then its probably worth close about $25.5K. Deduct for any upcoming major maintenance like TB/WP, A/C etc.

Wow! Lots of good responses, and so quick too! Thanks guys!
I will review the checklist, thanks for pointing that out.
One final question though: I realize that my 996 is 11+ years newer than the 928, and with that comes reduced maintenance requirements. But what kind of annual maintenance (not repairs, that's different) is required for these cars? Besides oil changes, brake fluid flush, the occasional coolant flush, the 30K or 50K (depending ) TB replacement and I suppose the WP is a preventive thing... (yes, I have been lurking, and I've picked up a few things) and spark plugs and such every-so-often, is there something unique to these cars that requires special maintenance?
Or are you all typical ****-retentive Rennlisters who maintain their cars far above and beyond what is normal human behavior?
Yes, I did check the classifieds, and those are some expensive cars!
THANKS AGAIN. If I do go look at the car, I'll update the thread with my impressions and let you know what happens.

The cost of ownership will depend entirely on how you define "maintenance."
If you just want to change the oil and fix what breaks or wears out as you go, your costs will likely be very reasonable.
OTOH, if you want to do preventative maintenance in advance - and also find yourself tempted to upgrade various things like refreshing the interior carpet and leather, replacing old and dry fuel lines, maybe add an X-pipe, buy cool new wheels, maybe install a new sub woofer, or even submit to the siren call of forced induction...
Then you better have a fairly thick wallet. Cuz it can be hard to resist those types of temptations, and the list can be a long one!

I bought my 90S4 4 years ago for $24K with 38K miles on it. New Tbelt, etc. replaced fluids and have been very happy since. Annual expense is a 143 charge and oil change. You will want a RMB and should be good to go.
Best of luck. Mac

Someone offered me a GT a few months ago, and I agreed to buy it... BUT, I'm having some issues getting my 930 finished and it's way more money than I thought it would be (even doing the work with friends). 4 valves, a cylinder, head studs, all seals and bearing, a turbo, etc etc. Shifter bushings, body work. YUCK.
Anyway, back to the GT. It's a '90 I think with 150K, black on black, looks awesome, and he wants $9000. If anyone is serious, I'll put them in touch with him... I don't know if it's sold yet or what, haven't been back in touch for a couple of months. WISH I could do it, but 928WW needs constant support- as such- unfortunately, this toy would have to wait. Although I would LOVE to bring it to the OCIC....

Meanwhile, in the 5 years I've owned mine I've spent maybe 5k, so assume about $1000 a year for preventative maintenance and upgrades. I've spent a bulk of theat money on wheels and tires, so actual car maintenace would be $3500, but I do my own repairs which certainly helps the per year price.

+1 If its a good car to begin with. I put an average of 9000 per year in mine for 4 years. But only 3-500 or so of that per year for stuff that actually failed. The rest was mods baby! These are the most reliable cars I've ever owned.

Do it! That GT looks nice, hope it checks out.
I have both a 928 and 993 & as much fun as the 993 is I much prefer driving the 928, as does my wife. Notice which car is for sale in my signature...

I had a C4 Corvette that I modded the crap out of, turned it into a superior track car that was unlivable on the street. I think the mod bug is behind me. My 996 is 100% stock as is my BMW 335. So I'm really just concerned with actual maintenance and repair costs on the 928.
Hinchcliffe, you'd probably have more luck selling your car if you'd unfreeze those rotors. Hard to drive in that condition.

Initial cost of ownership may mean fresh coolant hoses and NEW FUEL LINES. With check/RR of the timing belt and associated hardware.
The vacuum bits may need to be refreshed for everything to work.
Did I say NEW FUEL LINES.

You should make sure you come up to Frenzy in october!!
Even if you pass on this 928, come up and get a full dose.
We'll be doing a demo of a ppi so new(er) people will know what to look for.

Even more important than getting a nice 928, is getting the one that you like best, and suits your driving needs the best. Second best in a Porsche often isn't very satisfying.

928 isn't that expensive. Nothing really special vs other car... Except for the timing belt, which is one of the longest.
I've seen people put more $ of maintenance on a civic or a tercel then what I put so far on my 928.
And none of their run like mine.
