Default Taking Ownership of a 928 Tomorrow: Update 3

Warning! Gnarly 928 content below!

If everything works out as it should, I will be the proud owner of a black on black 1980 928, 5 speed, 94,XXX miles "project" car tomorrow. I am rolling the dice on this one.

The motor is out, but has a new clutch, everything is labeled and appears to be complete except for a few odds and ends. The motor and transmission are a mystery at this point, but there is a lot of service history that I have yet to fully review. The current owner says the previous owner drove it to his garage, but who knows?

The dash and the seats will need refinishing, new motor mounts and a chin spoiler for sure. The TB looks good, but I am going to replace it along with the WP and inspect pulleys and rollers. The clutch has less than 3k on it. It has not been on the road since 2000.

I bought this car because I always wanted a black on black 928 5 speed and with the hope that the good folks on Rennlist 928 forum will be kind enough to lend their knowledge and encouragement. Based on my limited exposure here, it is a very positive and helpful bunch. I am determined to make this car my daily driver. My 944 is wearing 400lbs springs and torsion bars and is not much for LA street and highway driving anymore. My Mercedes C280 burned to the ground a month ago.

Is there an online manual a la Clark's Garage?

Wish me luck!

Thanks.

PS - These are the pics as it sits today at the current owner's place.

Nice. Good call on the color. Black is the way to go. I have to fight chicks off me...of course that's because I don't stop for crosswalks and they don't like staying on the hood.

Lots of work ahead of you. Folks here will help a ton with knowledge and witty sarcasm.

I did, but not by much. My pockets are not deep, but my patience to get it sorted out is.

Your motor mounts may be okay in this '80 model. IIRC, it has the rubber block type mounts?

Why was the engine pulled ?? No big advantage to doing the water pump and belt now if it jumps nothing really bad happens. Get it together see if it passes smog find out how well it shifts and you also will find that it is just barely faster than your 944....on a good day you have 200 hp at the wheels.

The first thing that you need is the 928 tech info CD set from Jim Morehouse. This is basically all of the tech info available on the 928 gathered in one place - the best money that you could spend on the car. Jim's email is jim928ATptd.net - change the AT to @

What part of SoCal, I'm in City of Orange, and we have a fair number of people scattered around the area, with various types of support and tools like cherry pickers etc.

That's the Tehachapi car, was pretty sure it was something I saw before on CL.

WOW! Glad to see another one being saved, but I have bought nicer and RUNNING 928's that were WAY better and parted them out... YOWZA! You should have made them PAY YOU to haul it off!

Jim, what do you think on this one? $13k from being a $5k car?

Doing your own work and being patient will pay off big in the long run, but DAMN is there a lot of work to do on that car!

Michael, welcome over to the darkside! Well, you can see we are filled with incredible amounts of sarcasm here. However, you will see that the knowledge bank here when you need specific info will be unmatched.
Also, you happen to be located smack in the middle of a ton of 928 members and I am about an hour or so south.
You should definantly get the entire WSM on cd from Jim. As stated the 80 is not an interference motor so don't bother with the WP and TB right now, get the car runnings the rest will buff right out.
call me so we can get together to spend some time on that car, in return i can tool on mine at your place
also the 80 may have the lower hp numbers, but it sounds awesome with an exhaust, its light (for a 928) and the 8:1 compression is out of the box ready for 10psi

The guy who owns it now is gooping them up with some epoxy and says they will be good as new. I say, I will replace them .

He says (he thinks) the motor was pulled for a restoration and a hybrid conversion. I won't know until I give it a shot if my 2nd gear syncro is shot and if the motor is a dog or busted.

I love this idea. I would love to drop it in and see if I bought a winner or a loser.

Thank you. I will do that.

Shhhhh! You are not supposed to tally, my wife might hear. Besides, I am used to this pain - I paid $700 for my 944 and am well aware of the 80's water cooler math. I have also been warned of the 3X 928 factor. Finally, I hear hanging out on this forum is worth a 7k investment.

What a very nice offer. I have neither picker nor stand. I was thinking of buying them. I have a solid support group on 944's (mainly Legoland951 and Genikz) and would very much appreciate any local support I could get. I live in Santa Monica, but work on my cars (where it will reside) at our place in the desert (Lucerne Valley) where I love hosting parties.

It needs a ton but it is not as bad as it looks to a fool with an untrained eye like me.

Frank told me not to do it this morning .

I wondered where you went. Thanks for the words of support. My goal is to get it running as soon as possible. Please visit me in the desert, I have plenty of tools, three webers and all the mental lubricants one would need to see if I bought a clunker or stole a good car. I love that it is non-interference. I am thrilled I already know someone on here I have wrenched with. Michael
