Trying to locate the reason my car would randomly shut off!! Located it to be two injector wires shorting out against themselves. Got lucky and solved it quickly, I hate to think of all the tests I would have ran just looking for that problem.

Blown 87, you'd probably see more benifit than me, but they'll be going back in. Pretty sure passenger side can be bolted on before dropping the engine in. Then, drivers gets snaked in from the bottom with the engine hanging about 3" off the motormounts. PITA.

Headers are always fun, but sorry I could not help you out.

My friend's 928 suffered some damage from this not being done right.
Are you talking about the adell clamp at the rear of the engine? EDIT: can not be the one at the rear you are talking about with a coil ground.

Heck, that one is tough to put a new one on with the engine out of the car.

Why did Porsche change the routing of the main harness? I remember on my '86 I never had to even mess with it. I think it was routed just above the water pump, but can't remember for sure.

+1, I've got the repair bill from Greg to prove it. Trouble was, it was me (I?) who didn't route it right......

I think this is it for me. I hate, totally, doing a clutch master R&R. There is no easy way to do it and I've done it at least three different ways. They all suck.

I had a brake booster break internally the second time I did the remove-booster method and had to dismantle the booster in-situ to get it out. Taking the booster out isn't a win time-wise anyway.

I've done it with the motor out and it isn't that much easier. Cutting a hole in the body isn't going to make it much easier either.

IMO, No matter which way you do it, putting it back in is a two-person operation. Someone with long arms has to hold the CMC in place while a second person has to bolt it in from the passenger compartment. I've tried the "two-string" method to pull the CMC into place from the passenger compartment. It doesn't work very well. Two people can bolt it in five minutes. One person will futz with it for hours.

The other task I hate doing is putting on new steering rack boots. eng wie eine Jungfrau doesn't come close even with copious amounts of lube. I loose my hand strength very quickly when I do something near the limit. What I have learned to do now is to do one boot near the end of the day and then do the other in the morning.

Next, WTF is with the low side A/C port?

On the GTS they moved it to the front expansion valve. Great. It's easy to get to but you end up needing a second set of gauges or some monster-long hoses 'cause the high-side port is still at the other end of the car.

My current PITA are the upper A-Arm bolts on the inside of the engine bay. I got'em loose only because I'm doing the OPG too. I cannot imagine how to get them loose with the engine carrier in the way.

I have yet to see the results of body work that didn't make me just a little sick to my stomach.

Actually, I'll take that back. Your car's work actually looks pretty darn good. But, you took it apart and put it all back together yourself. My main beef with body guys is that they break stuff taking cars apart and don't put'em back together right.

What simple fix has made you want to lock the shop up and go drink shots? ...
I usually do not curse when working on a car, just do one thing and move on to the next thing,
When I get to the point of mad and cursing I call it a day. I never do good work when I'm angry or tired. When I try I end up having to go back and re-do half of it off-clock and that sucks worse than being behind schedule.

I'll drink to that. I have silently cursed Porsche's engineers every time I've R&R'd a steering rack.

Over the years I've decided that the first time I do a job I find little tasks that kinda suck and end up doing them the hard way. The second time around I stop and think and maybe come up with a better way. Lots of micro-tasks that used to suck are now no serious problem:

The harness clip on the right-side lift loop: attach everything with the loop loose from the head then attach the loop. Or use safety wire twisted like a bread tie to keep the clamp closed while you get the bolt started.

Injector clips: buy the ridiculously-priced Bosch tool. It works. The alternative it loosing the clips, dropping one in an intake port, or having to re-melt the connector plastic to retain them after they've been removed (or have injector connections come loose during the final test drive.)

For some reason I was never pulled over in my MGB's - especially for 146MPH...... never

Ahhh but the biggest headache besides having to stop driving and put the cover on - would be watching her go for a swim in salt water.
That will have you begging for the day you forget that little bolt when pulling the engine, and loving holding up the clutch for what seems like forever, or fitting the control arm bushings, or putting the new seats in without scratching all the paint, or or or or or - every thing is relevant, some folks headaches are other peoples dreams

Way to go brother, you have just turned a bitching about our cars thread into a realization that it could be a lot worse.
I want to thank you for that, we bitch about working on a Porsche, many never even get to sit in one, much less own the greatest GT car ever built.

My '85 would overheat for no apparent reason... Well, I find out that after a 1000 miles or so, the new owner blew the head gasket. That sucks!!! He let it get too hot- Or it was going to fail and that is why it was getting hot. I'll never know.

I will drink - in fact am - to that.

Every time I get a little irked at some micro-task I always think to myself: "I could be cussin' about a bolt on a 1987 Toyota. But, instead, I am working on a car that when I'm done is going to make the owner smile and for a little while forget about whatever else is causing stress in their lives."

This afternoon I took my now fully-tuned Twin-Screwed '91 on a short drive on the first damn sunny day we've had since before SITM to remind myself why I work on these cars.

And Greg - to answer that yes or no question you had for me late Friday night at the Best Western that I couldn't yet answer: Yes. Hell Yes.

You know Dave, most questions can be answered with a yes or no, and to quote a man I have admired for many years, John Force, sorry what was the question again?

PS, had a couple tonight, cooking REAL southern BBQ for chopped pork sometime tomorrow, and it is southern law, that it is a crime to cook REAL southern BBQ sober.

I hate when I can't find my bottle opener...it pisses me the "F" off! I really need to mount a bar quality opener on the wall. I tend not to bitch about the things I love....unless its my wife. Did I just say that out loud

suprisingly the engineering on these cars is extremely good and replacing things for me is very straight forward and easy.

Replacing the clutch master cylinder though is one job I do try to avoid. If it needs to be done I will pull the guts and inspect the bore, and if the bore is good I put the new guts in and avoid the mess of pulling and replacing that piece.

You know you've had enough - if you lost your car.
The best opener made, not recommended for garage queens
