Okay, I like being ignorant.... who is Steve C.?
While I'm at it, being ignorant, there is an obvious community of wrenches/dismantlers/part providers/paint/electrical. etc. experts in the 928 Forum. As a relative new comer it is a challenge to know who these people are and their area of expertise. There are the professionals and the non-pros who contribute here.
I have checked out the list of sponsors and that has helped a bit, but is there a list of people via their Rennlist names that indicates what they do/know/service? Just who are the pros/very good non-pros who provide more than advice when it comes to our cars? This information would be valuable to noobs and vistors in finding local or expert services.

Brian, you know my choice as I had Steve rebuild mine and highly recommend having Steve rebuild yours. While it's out, I would add the add the 928 super clamp by Constantine and rebuild the TT using his new bearings. Would be bullet proof when done and you would never have to worry about it again! Good luck in whatever you decide.

Use Steve. Also, dont forget to ask about the AMG special. Unlike your average trans guy, Steve knows the Mecedes gearbox guts that are shoved in our Porsche transaxle casing... including which bits from the AMG catalog are still available and fit. If for no other reason, I doubt you will be able to find another trans tech that can give you valve body (read reliable) first gear start. Think about how much more power your monster will put down with 1st gear start.

WTF was Porsche thinking with that?

Porsche needs the same caliber lobbyists like the ones that say hybrid cars are a good idea. I know Leslie & Joey wouldn't have walked away from their accidents had they been driving one of those ****boxes.

...gas mileage; EPA; 'gas guzzler tax; POLITICS. USA has the largest market and unfortunately, to get anything sold here, Porsche has to bend to our governments' ideals of the day... as do other car makers.

Got to be some other reason for it.
I can think of no other car that was designed to start in second, can you?
If it was because of any kind of US requirement, more cars would start in second.

Well, not 'direct' government input. But, it has been noted from several sources that the 928 auto was designed to start in 2nd gear to get better fuel economy.
Think about the happenings of the day: the world had just come out of the OPEC-induced gas crisis; the recession of the early '80s; the ever-increasingly-restrictive EPA mandates (that continue today); the political power of environmental PACs; etc.
Sure, it may have not been an official directive, but with the atmosphere of the day... it made good business sense to make it appealing to a broader market.
In the end... any decision usually finds its root cause as money.

Greg,
If I were a betting man, I'd place my money on government regulations influence...just ask your Vette buddies about the 1st to 4th shift gate. I know for a fact that was to meet some regulations because my brother in law was in charge of the C5 exhaust system design. I remember him telling me this allowed them to pass a noise test as well as assisting with fuel economy/emission tests.
