Default Behr radiators suck

And I'll give you one guess why.

But there are worse places to get stuck. My wife and I were headed into the mountains to enjoy Father's Day with a nice drive. We came up on this store and she said "I want some fresh peaches" so we stopped. After coming back out we discovered the problem above and that was all she wrote for the day. Luckily we met several very nice people and were in a nice air-conditioned store (and you wouldn't believe how good an apple cider slushie tastes on a 100deg day).

So a call to AAA and the truck was on the way...however despite the fact I told them to be sure he had extended ramps, we had nothin'. After some frantic searching we found 4 bricks and were able to "walk" the car on the flatbed with no spoiler damage. The truck driver was VERY nice and I was impressed with how careful he was. Turned out he's a racer running modifieds on dirt track, so he understood low cars.

Ready to head home...66 miles and NOT a cheap tow. I hope my insurance covers it.

Not a view anyone wants.

And I have to give big kudos to my lovely wife Peggy. She was helping the driver with the car, making sure things were safe, cheerful attitude the whole time while I was getting really pissed. But you know, I got to spend Father's Day with my wife, outside, met some really nice people, and the car can be fixed. Now I'm home with homemade peach ice cream in the freezer, tossing back a couple Coronas and watching the British Grand Prix. Life is pretty good.

RE: towing, I hate to say it, but my wife was right in making me get it a few years back - 2 words for you- AAA Plus. The GTS blew up 94 miles from 928Intl, where I had it flatbedded.

I know that view:

Because it's a stupid idea to make a radiator out of plastic?

Bingo! What crap. I've heard all the stories others have had about them, figured I wouldn't have a problem since this radiator was installed 10k miles ago - brand new Behr unit at great expen$$$e to the PO just before I bought the car. It split right along the plastic seam at the top of the passenger side tank. The only reason we caught it was because the car didn't start right away, really hot day and it didn't like it. I popped the hood to look at things and my wife spotted the bubbling. I mean WTF???? Plastic and apparently not even a single molded piece, but two halves joined with a seam???

So what are the best options here? I've seen a couple threads on them but haven't paid a lot of attention. I'd like a drop in solution and it had better be aluminum.

when mine cracked there, I made it miles and miles by unscrewing the radiator cap.

Go to a quality radiator shop and have metal side tanks built. Or a whole new radiator built.

I have an automatic 1984 radiator if you are interested. If so I can get it tested, they are pretty easy to replace.

just buy a new tank and seal go to a shop that changes the plastic side tanks, I found a place in Denver that did it for 75.00 in and out in a day.
The side tanks will usually last a long time but the reason they fail is due to the airpocket created at the top of the inlet side you can see inside the old tank there will be a little white line around the top where its filled with air and thus the tank is run hotter in the airpocket and due to flexing it fails.
I would suggest that you find a new black side tank not the yellow plastic

Or you can do it yourself by following the instructions I just posted here, a week ago.

That is a fantastic writeup, should be in the permanent forum. Funny how that didn't come up in my search and it was only a few days ago. I wasn't so sure about replacing the tank after reading all the stories of broken tabs, but I'm going to give it a try. I'm guessing the difference between an auto radiator and a manual is the presence of the transmission cooler?

I had it towed because #1 my wife was with me and I didn't want to chance getting stuck somewhere worse in that heat, and #2 because I could see a fountain in my future if I tried. The funny thing is I have a couple little things I wanted to get but was waiting until I had a bigger order...guess I don't have to wait any more.

Expensive but worth it: C&R.

I put one in mine, it is no longer the weak link.

If you have the money, get one of Carl's rads. Never worry again and looks trick under the hood.

I have a C&R one as well, really works great even in the 95+ degree heat we've been having lately.
