Default Louie's Oregon Fun Drive..

As alluded to in Shane's post/poll, Louie Ott set up a fun run in Central/Eastern Oregon yesterday. A group of us from Washington (myself, John Davis, Mark (John's neighbor who just picked up his first 928 - 89 Samtrot S4), and Shane).

Started out leaving my place in Oly to meet up with Shane at Exit 88 in
Rochester. Waited a bit for John and Mark to meet us. I think we were underway about 7:30 ish...for the tentative meeting time of 10 in Mosier. Headed out and were making good time ...getting ready to exit 205 towards 84..and all of a sudden a WSP pulls up behind me and on his loud speaker says something like.."follow me"...he goes up to Shane and says the same.....So..like good obedient 928'ers..we pull over and stop. At this point I notice Shanes car is smoking pretty bad...and smells like anti freeze. We decide to get off at the next exit and see whats up. No oil in antifreeze or visa-versa..but still suspect a breached head gasket. Head over to a local gas station to get some antifreeze...and to see if the car is drivable enough to get Shane home... at that point I get a call from John asking where we where..I was hesitant..but John informed me that the Trooper just wanted to "talk to us"...so we give up our locale. The trooper pulls in to the gas station and asks for our licenses and registration etc... You should have seen the looks on the local barista's faces...I bet they thought it was going to be a big bust or something LOL. We got our talking to about fast porsches and people using cells phones to call in and he goes on his way.

We make sure Shane is sorted (his wife would come down with truck and trailer to get him home) and the rest of us were off... Call Louie to let him know we were going to be a bit late. Get to Mosier around 10:30..and meet Gary (beautiful 79 with full Strosek kit, 5.0 bottom end, 4.5 euro top end fully polished, S4 brakes etc etc..we'll have to get Gary on here to talk about his car..as it has a very cool storied past) and the rest of the group (Jim and Sue Corenman and Louie and Christine). Since we are running a bit late we decide to just boot it to the first stopping point..up some twistie roads by Louies place...dodging pelotons of bikers ..and we get to the "Shooting Range"...all of a sudden everyone is reaching in their cars and pulling out an arsenal of weapons that would make the Mossad proud LOL...well..not quite..but still some nice stuff . Spent some time there..My boys got their first chance to shoot some firearms..they both had a blast..and were definitely reminded to "wear ear protection" . It was too cool just picking off the targets and the rocks..made mincemeat of the targets for sure . After that is back on the road and off to Condon OR for lunch. Some nice long twisties and "legal speeds" LOL....While we were eating, a Carrera GT and a Ferrari (don't remember the model) pulled up at the hotel. Nothing like 1mil worth of cars pulling into a small town .

After lunch..more of the same on the way to Fossil OR..where we stopped to dig for yep...fossils. Wasn't much there to find..some leaf imprints etc..but still a nice break...After Fossil..Louie warned that the next stretch of road was the bane of those that get car sick..and that he would keep it sane for Chris' benefit..and that those that wanted to take it at a brisker pace..should get in front...no sooner said...John, Mark, and Gary ..take the lead and were not to be seen again for a little while haha. I took it slow due to my passengers..and sure enough ..Ben (who was in the back seat the whole trip) started to feel a little rough..luckily we got to our first stop for a quick break, PHEW>...no lost lunch . Off at a slower pace on our eventual destination of Grass Valley and
Oregon Raceway Park to hook up with Keith Martin who was there for a PCA track day. I'm running low on fuel..so had to stop just short of the track for
fuel...one horse town...87 octane only??? well..$10 should get me to dinner .
ORP is a great looking track..but still in development..gravel road for 2 miles
to get to it...can you say dusty?. Got there...met up with Keith who was having
issues with his wheel bearings..so was done for the day.. Also ran into Trevor
who attends our semi-annual TA's in Spokane.. Looks like a great track and one we should consider. After ORP we head back to civilization(Hood River) for the dinner at the Indian Head Golf Course, have a nice relaxing dinner..and then head home....

Long drive, great drive, lots of cool breaks in between, no tickets, only one
casualty (Shane), It was a good day . Thanks for setting it up Louie. I
think this could become the Oregon version of our own Heckowee tour.

There were way more than 9 during the event....and I know I've taught my boys right when they say to me as the WSP come overto talk to us....Don't worry Dad, we won't tell the cop you were speeding LOL... Of course we weren't

Isn't the Green Bay Supercharger team planning on a Rescue Shane warranty event sometime soon? LOL. You can join them and come on over...

The Oregon/Washington 928ers are a close and active group....and very creative and hands-on.

I'm looking forward to learning more about Dr. Ott's Great White Monster 928 and its latest jet fuel system. RWHP, estimated top end, what he's doing for traction, etc.

I've seen the mockup and am amazed. He's taking 928s to a whole new level,,,,and without forced induction. Neat stuff!!

Tom, thanks for sharing the stories and pictures, and a big thanks to Louie for organizing the drive! We had a great time! Great roads and very light traffic which was nice-- just a few very nervous bicyclists on route 30 between Mosier and The Dalles (that is one seriously twisty road!).

Cheers,

Hi,
Thanks for taking and posting the pictures, Tom. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed the drive with us too. I think I drove about 260 miles and that was the least of anyone. The Seattle crew must have driven close to 600.

When are you guys planning another event in the Oregon area? I am free every weekend this summer.

I have nothing additional planned now. Possibly someone else does. Watch the PacNW email list as that is usually where events get planned and posted. There is a track session at Spokane in September. Did you know about that?

Just got the videos up on youtube...search for tmidlman or click the link...
http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...=tmidlman&aq=f

There are Spokane TA videos there too..I've dubbed in generic music on the drive videos so you don't hear the chatter of me and my boys..but the originals are available if anyone wants one..
