Default New wheels! Did I make the right decision? - With Pics

Although i've just had my Cup 1's powder coated, the two back ones are slightly buckled and vibrate when exceeding the speed limit on the highway.

I came across these and agreed to buy them! I did get a little bit off the asking price, because he'd had them for a while... He originally had them advertised for £1000!
Anyway, They seem like good value considering the new Bridgestone tyres (the cheapest I could find was £594 for a set of SO-2's)

I hadn't heard of the manufacturer before - Folger Karosserie, but they look like they make some nice wheels!

I know the front offset is a little out, but they will still fit ok. I can't post pics of them on my car just yet, because I don't pick them up until this weekend.

What do you guys think?

Hi Ben , I take it that the front offsets are 50 ? , if they are then that's 15mm per side out , you may find when the new tyres settle in the steering may wander a bit (sensitive to the camber of the road etc ).
Regards .BB.

Ben,

Those are very nice looking wheels. The front offset (ET50) is smaller than a lot of folks are comfortable with -- do some poking around here or maybe somebody with experience will jump in.

Be sure to check the date-code on the tires. Bridgestone S-02's are very good tires but haven't been manufactured for some time. I think 6 years from date of manufacture is the limit in most European countries.

Cheers,

Everything you ever want to know about wheels and offsets can be found right here... this is a good summary, but it's not my work.

I did search with regards to the 50mm front offset, and it seems like there are a few people running them in both 7.5 and 8" widths, so i'm not that concerned really. I bet my replica Cup1's are getting on that way at the front, they do stick out compared to some i've seen.

The european Bridgestone website still lists the SO-2 as a current product, and my tyre retailer said he had no problem in obtaining them when I checked the prices earlier. Here in the UK there is no law stating that a tyre can't be used over a certain age, but common sense says otherwise! I'll check the date codes anyway when I go to pick them up.
Anyway, i'm glad of the positive responses... looks like I made the right choice!

Edit:

I did a little research, and it appears that the 8x18's were only available in 56mm offset. I guess a 6 can look a bit like a 0 when painted over. Anyway, we'll see when I pick them up!

I don't know how much the wheels on the CGT are, but my guess is that they are pretty expensive. Maybe someone will develop an aftermarket set, I think will look awsome on the 928

No need to wait for aftermarket, Porsche made them and fitted them to Caymen S cars

I guess my new wheels are about 20 years too late as 959 replicas. Although not shown in the original for sale adverts, they do come with centre caps.

50mm offset is just fine, trammlining (wandering on road ruts), is more a function of a bad alignment than the 50mm offset.

Mine went away with new tires and an alignment.

Ship me a set of alternate 18" wheels and I could do you a trade

I'll be picking these up on Sunday afternoon, so with any luck i'll try them on the car on Monday... Will post some pics then.

Well here we go.. Wheels are now fitted!

I'm still unsure as to what the actual offsets are... The PO says he had the markings ground off, so he could run without the centre caps. He claims they are 50mm and 47mm. I measured the front and got 56mm (which confirms what the folger website says an 8x18 should be), but when measuring the back I got 42mm, which seems a bit of an odd number. I dunno, maybe my measuring technique isn't very good!
Anyway, I do have the centre caps, but don't currently have them fitted. I'm waiting for some Porsche badges for the centre because the current ones are shot.
Tyres are all in great condition.. are like new. All are dated 2007, and are N-2 rated! They are 'only' 225/40 and 265/35, but it seems a shame to change them for wider ones due to them having so much tread left.

It appears that the PO ran these with the original radius wheel nuts (only a tiny amount of paint wear where the nuts contacted), so I ordered some correct M14x1.5 with 60' taper. They took some finding, they are an odd size!
