Default Pass cam gear further back then drivers 86.5

Looking at the manual the only parts are the cam gear, bolt, spacer and lock washer. It seems like the passenger cam gear is sitting further back than the drivers. Is this a problem or should I not worry about it.

put a belt on the front of the engine and see where the belt tracks.
One bank of cylinders are offset from the other side ( one head if farther to the front and the other is farther to the back by about the thickness of a connecting rod

When we took it off the belt was all the way rear on the passenger side cam, should I place a washer behind it? I don't remember my 86 having this issue.

on the the PS cam the belt should ride about 2mm from the front edge of the gear.
Is it possible the gear was mounted the wrong way??
Please post some pictures it will be easier to see whats going on

All the way rear indicates a bent shoulder bolt and/or worn out tensioner arm bushings and/or too high belt tension. Both sides should be ~3mm from the front of the gear.

S4-up, the passenger side (1-4) gear is spaced forward 1mm because of the hall sensor shutter wheel.

You we see that the passenger cam sits further back than the drivers.

On 32V engines, the rear cover is closer to the gear on the 1-4 side.

Tampa your picture looks like its OK
If there was something wrong with the tensioner it would actually push the belt forwards and it would rub on the back of the crank damper, that is why you can usually see a polished edge on the front of the belt edge

Resurrect.

Having the same "issue". Noticed the passenger side was further back by several mms. Took a straight rod flat against the face of the driver's side to confirm a small edge. Checked and re-checked, everything tight (back plate, spider hub seated, gears seated).

Guessing this is just normal and that's there's really no offset on belt tracking (both 3mm from front of gear, not just one side?)
