Trust me, it's a second pump. It has electrical terminals connected in parallel with the rear pump, and when you apply power it moves fuel. The fiflter is in the front portion of the rear wheelwell, alonng with the accumulator.

Made it! I'm a bit weary due to the unexpected delay which set me back, but I got in this morning. Thanks all of you for your help and insights. Also, Donald, your guy did call me, and the place he suggested was the place where I was. I'll post pics this evening, but the shop was fantastic, and the owner was not only a Porsche guys, but had had several 928s in the past - I was in good hands. First thing he did was lift the car and look at the rebuilt alt that was installed last year. The unit was fine, but because it's a Bosch unit, the back plate is a different configuration from the original unit, and the wie harness connection into it doesn't fit snuggly - long and short - I had looses wires. He tightened it up, added a couple of washers to take up the slack, and fired it up. The battery was once again charging, and the reading wwas a solid 13.6. The cluster guage still showed just over 12, but that's how it is. I'll do Dave's cluster R&R this winter, and hopefully get a closer reading.
Anyway, the rest of the trip was uneventful. These cars are truly amazing - 31 year old car, cruising efffortlessly in the triple digits across SD/WY/MT. I love this car!
Also, thanks for the offer on the altermnator Kevin - I'm good to go for now. Anbd Malcolm, I'll look forward to seeing you sometime this summer, with the rest of the local gang from here, and Mike (Greywolf) from back east.
Pics to follow this evening, plus a good story of the place where I got stranded - dim the lights and get out the popcorn - it's a scary story!

Thanks for your insights as always Dave. I'll be looking at your pages, Tony's pages, Dwaynes pages, etc to bring this car back to its full show-room floor glory. I've got to say, tho, it's pretty close now.

okay, here are pics of the garage that I lucked out in finding - this guy looked like he knew what he was doing, and he was very familiar with the 928. I recommend this place highly if you are ever out that way and in a jamb.

Ok, here's the story. After stopping in Sioux Falls for a late dinner, I got back on the road just as the sun was going down. Sioux Falls is a big city by South Dakota standards, but tiny by any other standard. Once you are 10 miles out of town, there is nothing of consequence for over 300 miles, and that is Rapid City, an even smaller SD town (famous of course for Mt Rushmore).
So, I headed out of town into the twilight, with the miles clicking by. I stopped for gas at a sleepy little outpost, and when I pulled in the radar detector started chirping, with a "low voltage" message. I had never seen this before. I looked at the dash cluster, and sure enuff, a dimly lit battery light was on, and the voltage gauge was below 12 volts. I turned everything off, and the light went out and the guage went back up to 12 volts (normal for this car - see above posts).
I got my gas and decided to continue down the road to find a hotel. Jumped back on the highway, and now things started getting bad, with "sys failure" imminent.
I got off at the next exit - very dusty, sleepy little outpost, with a gas station/convenience store, and a casino/lounge in a separate building out back. At this point I'm about 30 miles West of Sioux Falls, and I've been down this trail before - ain't nothin nowhere near. I was committed!
So I go into the store and ask where the nearest hotel is. The clerk points to the casino out back, and says they rent rooms for $45 a night. Hmm, I say, so out I go.
I walk over and in, and at the bar are 3 rough and tumble looking guys, with no smile in their eyes, and a rhumey, coughing bartender with a 4 day growth on his cheecks. They all stop what they are doing, and watch me come in. It's silence except for the droning of some reality program on the TV.
I ask the barkeep about a room, and he says sure, but it's been awhile since anyone rented one. He takes me out of the bar area into a cavernous spot - a big open area, with separate doors off it - these are the rooms. No phone, no TV in rooms, and no in-room bathroom, just a shared shower bathroom off the common area. It's cold in there too, andf it feels like a wharehouse or meat packing facility.
We go back into the bar/ casinio room, and he starts the paperwork (which was simply taking my credit card - didn't check my ID, or write down my name or phone number or anything). He then proceeds to tell me the combination number to my room door, which he says is the same number to get into the lodge area, and for the outside door into the lodge. Of course, the 3 guys at the bar are all sitting there about 2 feet away, and clearly hear him tell me the combo (#1226 if you ever stop there).

At this point, if this were a tv movie, you'd be hollaring at the screen at the top of your lungs "DON'T STAY THERE, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN; THEY'LL COME IN AFTER YOU'RE ASLEEP AND CUT YOU UP INTO LITTLE PIECES AND HANG YOU IN THAT BACK ROOM WITH THE OTHER LOST SOULS WHO HAPPENED TO WANDER IN!" or something like that. Anyway, what the hell was I going to do? My car was toast.
So, I did the next logical thing and went out into the bar and ordered a beer. I took it back to the room, and drank it straight down, and now had my weapon just in case. I then went back to the car, and got my stuff. I checked the belt tension (fine), looked at the battery post and other ground connections (like everythnng else on the car, nice and shiny and like new), and I disconnected the ground strap to stop any resiudual battery leakage.
I then went back to my room and locked myself in, waiting for the steps to come to my door or the full size window in the rear of the room. I looked out, and it showed a gravel lot and a million miles of emptyness, all at waist high, easy access level. By this time I was beat to **** and back. I called Mike (Greywolf) and asked him to post this thread, then shut down the lights and waited to die, hoping it would be quick and painless, and not involve chainsaws and such. Needless to say I slept fully clothed.
And I slept for what felt like 10 minutes, which actually was about 3 hours or so. I woke up at 4am, had to ****, thought about the tiolet out there in the emptyness, and said to myself, f#%k it, not going out there. I laid in bed for awhile, finally wandered out, and the whole place was deserted - I could have gambled and drank all night by myself! Ha!
By 5am, I decided to head back to Sioux Falls. I figured I had enough juice for the ride (I did). So I put it all back together, crossed my fingers, and away I went.
By the way, in the daylight, the place wasn't so bad. The folks were friendly too, and the rooms were clean. It is used as a hunting lodge in season, which is why there are no signs or anything, and why it was deserted now. Most of my anxieties were in my head, which is usually the case. The place is called "The Last Stop Lodge" - I kid you not
