Power steering pump

Power steering pump
I recently replaced the power steering pump on my 85 928 (86k miles) because it was leaking fluid. The car steered a little harder at idle speed than most cars, but that was not an issue in replacing the pump.
I bought two rebuilt pumps, both from reputable 928 parts suppliers, and both failed. Both looked brand new. The first didn't pump at all; the second has little or no power assist whatsoever at idle speed, and backing the car up is almost impossible.
The pumps were installed by a certified Porsche mechanic I've used for years. The restriction in the high pressure line was removed and the resevoir filter is clean. The ATF was changed twice in an effort to get the second pump to work at low speeds. Since the original pump worked, there is little doubt that the two used pumps were bad. The mechanic said the pumps probably had gaskets and seals changed without insuring that the pump components were adequate to provide needed pressure and flow.
I now must put a third pump on and will buy no more used ones. I see that 928 Specialists is selling a NEW high output one for much less than I paid for the used ones. Does anyone have information about the quality/failure rate of these?
I would greatly appreciate comments from those experienced with the pumps about what I should buy.
The rack on my car is good and I don't want to change it. I owe my mechanic a small fortune for the wasted removal and installation labor he did because of the bad rebuilt pumps. I should have bought a new one in the first place.
Thanks,
Gary

now you know how to answer your question, buy a new pump.
Refill the system with Dextron 3 or 4
If a new pump still doesnt cure this then you should get a rebuilt rack, I suggest 928 international for a rack

Just replaced the pump on my 89 S4 with the high output Griffins unit - $175 from Roger. The pump was new and works great. This replaced a rebuilt unit that I got on e-bay for the same price - that unit didn't even make it out of the repair shop as it leaked and was almost impossible to turn the wheels. Will not ever buy mechanical parts on e-bay again - never.

Xpress- I am thinking of upgrading my pump on the 87 - how is your new one working out? Did you replace the rack at the same time? Did you remove any flow restrictors etc. Any detailed info would be appreciated. thnx Doug
