I think Heinrich is confused. The oil filter has a rubber seal on it to seal against the engine block. That's it. This rubber seal is attached to the filter. It can come off butusually. If you are missing that seal from a replacement filter, you can usually use the one from the old filter in a pinch. YMMV.
