Removing RMB questions
So, yes I know I'm too old, or it's too loud or something....but I have decided to remove my RMB and install an original muffler. (actually I love the sound in the city, but the drone on long trips....ugh). I've done some noise suppression work whcih helped, but I'm still ready to give it a try.
Anyway, I bought the car with the RMB installed and wanted to know:
Is this something I can do in my garage with common tools or is this something better done by a muffler shop?
I see the clamps holding the RMB to the stock pipes and it looks straightforward, but I thought I'd ask a more experienced audience.
thanks in advance,

You need a 13mm socket and a wrench to counter-hold the head. One bolt/clamp for eackh pipe and you may need to loosen the muffler hanger on the muffler to re-instal. Easily done in the comfort of your own garage. Drink pleanty of beer.

Hi Adrian,
Yes you can put back the stock muffler with common tools.
I installed my RMB at home without any trouble. So the reverse procedure should not be more difficult.
Make sure before you start to remove your RMB that all your rubber hanger are still good.
Good luck.

Hey Adrian,
I'm looking for an RMB for my '90, so unless you were going to hang it over the mantle, or wait till you see if the quiet works, we may be able to reach an agreement.......?

Thank you everyone for the responses...I can't guarantee I'll have my muffler installed tonight, but if I follow your advice, at least I'll be drunk.
Andrew - we met at SITM 07. I think that year you didn't have your shark with you... something about a throwing the crank pully if I remember right. I was there with Checkmate in the yellow 79.
928 at last - I'll be keeping it for now just in case I'm not happy with the muffler. BUT I'm pretty sure I'll have a RMB for sale soon - you'll be the first to get a PM.
Regards.

Alas, not this time. I moved the Pac NW a year ago so SITM's not as convenient as it used to be. On another note I'd like to pick your brain sometime about your experiences in the world of supercharging the 928. I've taken about a year to get the car ready, but I'd like to talk with someone who's lived through it.

Well, it's done. An original muffler has taken the place of the RMB....making my system a rear muffler bypass bypass... In anycase I'm sure it's worth more HP and soon will be all the rage ....
WOW what a difference. Y'know, I've been around soooo many RMBs that I'd forgotten what the stock sound was like. Still grumbly, but....dare I say it, I bit disappointing after the monster growl I'm used to. Oh well, tomorrow I'll see how it is on the freeway and that will be the acid test. And if it doesn't suit my taste, it's pretty darn easy to swap back.
Thanks to all who replied.

Hi H-
Yeah...let me see if I like the switch first and we'll see. another lister already asked, but I'm up in Seattle fairly often and could drop it off IF I decide to let go if it.
I haven't gotten into the Pac NW group yet...do you guys have a regular get-together like SITM?

Adrian,
If You are too old for the RMB, then sell it to Heinrich, and make both of You happy.
And sell the Fikses to me and I also can be happy.
Basically I dont care much about You and Heinrich being happy, I just want those Fikses
EDIT: ... and You can have my rub strips, as You dont have any !
