Default How to open the back hatch

I just recently got an '81 928 and I got no key with it. I got one from the dealer and it doesn't work in the rear hatch. This car was messed with by some kids and they"hot wired" it. I need to know how to open the hatch so if I hook the battery up and there is smoke or that nasty burning smell of wires I can disconnect it right away. There is a little post sticking up next to the seat where I think an electric release might be (no handle), and it is connected to a connector full of wires. Also back by the lock of the hatch there are wires too. I can't get at the lock itself, it is boxed in place. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. I am close to being done with changing the timing belt and I want to hear it and drive it !!!

If you crawl back there ,and remove the tool set, you can get to the mechanisim and release the hatch. then, you can replace the lock with a new key set.

Mark is correct but as you are new to 928 here is a little more detail.......

Crawl into hatch
Remove tool panel (round **** each side)
look on right side of center vertical bar you will see motor.
Vertical bar attaches to motor with plastic cup.
Reach in and push cup off motor arm ball
push arm straight up to release latch.

If this does not work because hatch pin is worn slide flat blade screwdriver up and push white plastic catch to rear hatch will open.

there may also be a silver colored shield on the out side of the lock mechanisim, its held on with 2 10mm bolts if you remove these bolts you may be able to see the locking arm better

Use a long, thin ended flat screwdriver.

From inside the car you can reach back at the hatch / body joint, insert and twist a little and pop it open.

Doies the early car even have the release motor?

The 1981 has no hatch release motor, the "switch" by the Brake handle WAS the radio fader for the original radio now long gone. Much of the above advice is wrong !
