Default New Here...Question

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to Porsche's, but not to cars...I've always wanted a 928 GTS but could never find one...so I settled [for now] for an '85 928S with 89,000 original miles on her. She needs a new coat of paint and some other work, but nothing major. It will be a fun project.

I have one question that I cannot figure out for the life of me, even after searching this forum - I need a spare key, and it seems the 928 keys are unique and very hard to come by. I've read about members buying the head and the blank and them having them cut locally, or the like...but which Porsche key head & blank do I get? I found this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSC...1%7C240%3A1318

Is this the correct head and blank? I think this is the one people here are referring to, but the profile looks different from my key...could someone please advise on which head and blank to get, please? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
-Mark

The ebay link is the wrong key, that won't work. Look carefully at the photograph on ebay, this is a 928 key:

I got my spare from a photograph in Australia, sent to my home in Holland. $5 shipping costs and no risk losing your original key. Here's a big thread on that: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...hotogragh.html

I have a 928s '84 euro, partially because cars after 25 years old are tax-free here and I like the series 1 design. It's in the spray shop too

yeah, and you can just click the blade into the head. Oh, by the way, you might want to order a non-original blade from softer metal because the hard original metal can wear down your locks. Better to wear down your key than your lock, right?

check out keys4classics.com

They read the code from a decent photo of your key, and have the huf blanks in stock (they buy them from 928intl if I recall rightly). Not too cheap, but you keep your existing key, and they're quick.

Lots here have used them, as well as on the UK and Aussie mailing lists.

I bought a lighted key head from Roger Tyson to go with my new huf key from them.

edit: Ah, just caught concor's refernce to them via another thread, above Also, you don't need to order a blank yourself - keys4classics have the huf ones. Just need a good photo of your key.

Yeah I know, I didn't mean it in an offensive context at all It's just that when I get my mind set on something specific and I can't obtain it for whatever reason it frustrates the hell out of me!

The good thing about it is by the time I find a GTS I will have finished restoring the '85 and won't want to part with her...then I'll have two 928's. Works for me.

With Obama in office, you might be able to get one sooner than you think

Check out your local locksmith - mine will order the blank and cut a key for less then the blanks sell for on fleabay.
The '85 is one of the best cars out there - some of us prefer the earlier, lighter bodies, and non interferance motors.
Welcome to the club.

928 Int'l used to make them if you are on the west coast.
