timing belt question
I looked a little closer at the passenger side cam gear and belt. The belt is not running on the back edge of the belt. There is some distance there. It is hard to see (or take a picture of) since it is shrouded by the cam cover plate.
I would still like to know if the 0.8mm difference I am seeing between the cam gears and belt is normal.

The odd looking back side belt wear pattern could be just transfer from the gear coating you had done and that gold area from paint transfer from the rebuilt WP - the rebuilders paint the pulleys to LOOK like a factory cad plate.
I know a few people have done re-coating of worn cam gears. Most of the time when I see cam gears with the coating significantly worn off, the underlying teeth are worn and dished and re-coating them is not something I would consider. If the teeth aren't dished at all, then no problem with re-coating. Anyway, that coating may be transfering and making the belt look dirty and scuffed . Er, uh, but the coating would transfer to the other side of the belt! Anyway, I don't like the appearance of this 500 mile belt. Didn't you write there was a cut so you were thinking of pulling the belt? Just do it. Also, I will expose my bias against these Conti belts after a bad experience I had personally, although that had to do with belt stretch rather than any odd wear pattern.
I think Bill has it nailed down.
The 1-4 gear is slightly forward because of the hall effect rotor, and the belt is marked with paint from the rebuilt waßerpumpen.
I would add that I have seen that when the engine is turned off, the belt can end up in a different spot than it does while the engine is running.
Note that besides the big spot, the other marks on the belt are also gold colored.

Thanks for all the replies. I defintiely feel better now. I will post a pic of the slice in the Conti belt and will also comment on whether or not the Porkensioner piston is further extended on the Conti versus Gates, since there has been discussions that the Conti is somewhat longer.
