Default Steering Column Adjustment

My steering column adjustment has never worked since I bought my car--while pulling the knee bolster ('91 model doesn't have shelf) under the steering wheel in order to do my HVAC refresh I noticed a ball bearing had fallen out of wherever it comes from and was nicely wedged between the two metal plates that are supposed to slide past each other when the height of the steering wheel is adjusted. I was able to pop the bearing out and I think it went back to were it is supposed to be but I sort of lost sight of it when it finally budged so I'm not really sure where it went. In any case, the steering column sort of adjusts now but it still doesn't seem as smooth as it should be--I can kinda wrestle it into whichever height I want it at and then lock it but it's not real easy to move and when it's locked I can still get it to move a little if I really push it. So, I think I heard a rumor somewhere that Porsche had a lot of problems with this part and there is a replacement part out there somewhere that upgrades this to something that works better? Anyone know what I'm talking about? I can't seem to find a post and I don't see anything like this on any of the vendor sites.

Thanks, Dan
