I have to say that I have always been happy with Meguiar's products, particularly the rubbing and polishing compounds.

Concur, my bad. I expected there would be strong, wholly subjective opinions and thought that might lead to some interesting dialog. And then there's always the flipside.

I also wondered whether, like batteries and many motor oils, the discussion might reveal that there are relatively few labs mixing substantially similar products that are marketed differently and based on marketing niche/success, command different price points. But that was pure conjecture, prompted by the idea of a few small indies going large and that it marshaling resources for truly new/proprietary approaches must take long lead time and large bankroll.

Plus in our community there's Andy for Griots (now at Advance Autoparts around here), Amzoil sells some products so I figured Mark might opt in (OK that only just now occurred to me ) and there's Larry from Car Care Specialties that has vis on a number of products including offerings from Europe. Due to the boat I do have collonite on hand..but mainly because I went over to other products, the Collonite seemed prone to a yellow hue, at least over my older 'glass.

Anyway, thank you for the acrylic/sealer recommendation - true it's my DD and I'm now finding it difficult to maintain carnuaba shell with thirty year old, thirty year old boat and ten year old motorcycle all relegating my time/attention to repairs and rote maintenance well into the fall by now.....

Default Best Wax is an Opinion

I've got a shelf dedicated to car finishes. Best finish I've found after doing the wash, claybar, polish is Collinite Paste Fleetwax #885; Marine and Aeronautical wax. Finish and durability IMHO is spectacular. Prep prior to final wax is critical.

It truly is all about the recovery effort, with the products and techniques that get the finish to where you want it with the smallest possible amount of damage and paint removal in that process. Choice or wax or sealant at that point is based on the protection needed. The marine environment is pretty brutal, with high reflected sunlight and water deposits. A thick, relatively soft paste-wax finish is perfect. But for a car, the thick paste-wax finish is subject to easier scratching and swirl marks just from regular washing. It also tends to slightly dull the reflection on dark finishes, with a light yellow haze showing on white. For in-between colors, the relatively soft surface buffs out incredibly well though, flowing with the heat generated by the buffing process.

There's a whole Rennlist forum dedicated to cleaning and detailing. Folks would do well to visit that area and do a little reading on what folks are using and doing. The major product manufacturers like Mothers and Meguiars have great education sites too. Larry at Car Care Specialties has a great site with relatively unbiased reviews of most of the better products. Larry is a huge Porsche enthusiast and supporter, and deserves our support. There are other supporting vendors here that deserve a look, many of which offer RL discounts on their products.

I'll vouch for Larry Reynolds. I visited his store last year and ended up talking Porsches and paint care for about an hour. I've also attended his sessions at local PCA events. All the products and methods he has suggested have worked out nicely when applied to my cars.
