Here is the process and products I use on Sharky...
1: Wash with Optimum "no-rinse"
2: Claybar (I use Adams) with Adams quick detailer as lubricant
3: Polish (this can vary depending on whats needed but typically)
Optimum Polish on Lake Country white pads with Porter Cable set to about 4-5
4: Wax-seal with Optimum Opti Seal....GREAT stuff...super easy to use and lasts forever....
The key to a great shine is all about the POLISH step....most good waxes will give a good shine...but to look exceptional its all about proper polishing to achieve that great shine...

How much effort do you want to put into it and what type of polishing equipment do you have at your disposal?

Three Wheelin'
It was originally formulated to protect the finish of the Bugatti Royale, a rare late 1920's ultra-luxury car (only about half a dozen were built) so meticulously crafted and exquisitely engineered that today it is considered a work of art. Suitable for all paint types and colours. Royale Glaze contains 70% Brazilian No.1 White Carnauba by volume.
This container is refilled for life at no charge.Important: You must use zymol HD-Cleanse to remove old wax, tar and stains before applying any zymol Waxes or Glazes; otherwise they will not bond to the paint surface.

Are you looking to remove deep swirls or scratches? If not a polish like Optimum polish followed by a good carnauba wax will work well. I just did a paint restoration on my 85 and this is what I used in order:
Riccardo blue clay bar and lube
Optimum Hyper compound - LC Orange pad - rotary buffer at 1200 rpm
Optimum Polish - LC White pad - Orbital buffer medium speed
Meguiers Deep Crystal polish - LC Black pad - applied with orbital at lowest speed, removed by hand
Meguiers Pure Carnauba - LC Black pad - applied with orbital at lowest speed, removed by hand

every body has their own thing David. Do what the high end shops like ours do. Wash thoroughly and detail with soft toothbrushes in the crack and seams. You only need two products for what your doing. First use 3M Swirl remover(machine polish) on a black 3M hook-it waffle. Follow with 3M ultrafina on a blue 3M waffle pad. Use light to medium speed and run it slow. After this let it set a day or two and wash it. Then apply 3M finishing glaze to lock it all down.

Do you have a link w/ prices to the 3M products your shop uses? Or do you think those items may be available locally?

David, the machine polish and the Ultrafina are about 40.00 each. You can use a cheaper (12.00)Meguiars finishing glaze with good result. If you have a Colours or Nyquist supplier in your area they will cut you a break on price if you ask for it.

I thought Guards Red had clear from the factory from 1990 onwards?
My '89 is certainly single stage, but the reading I've done while looking into paint was that Porsche started using a clear coat on Guards Red when they switched to the water-based paints.

I've worked on a mid 90's guards red which was single stage. Stunning color when properly polished and waxed.

I also heard that the single stage 928's ended around 1990 too.....however my only experience waxing them is on 88's and earlier....since all of the newer ones around here are all clear coated colors in the 1st place
