I bought 2 5 gallon jugs of Mobil 15W-50 at Walmart yesterday for 23.88 - Advance Auto wants $9+ a quart.

Kevin,

Check the volumes - just might be 5 qts, not 5 gallons per jug. Not QUITE as fabulous a buy, but still a good one!!

I use Valvoline VR1 20w-50.

I used to use the Mobil1, but had problems with the engine starting and even keeping it in idle so I switched. And I gather being Mobil1 is so close to the borderline ok, that any flux variance within a single batch can cause problems.

BradPenn, Amsoil, Redline and Torco is a good too (especially Torco advocated by Gregg). [non racing versions, and even if you race our oil reservoirs are so bloody huge that it might not be worth getting the racing version either]

But eh, ill stick with Valvoline as an economical choice being it is close to Mobil1 in price, and it always in stock at my local parts store, so I don't have to worry about shipping, and I get a discount too.

the Valvoline racing and mobil 1 was nasty at the track with oil pressure levels in the danger zones. (at only high temps.) on the street, i see no issues... but i dont run it, my buddy with the 6 liter stroker runs it

so, good luck with saving 5 bucks a quart (50 dollars an oil change once a year) with endagering a $5000 engine rebuld. lets see, thats like gas costing 12 cents more for you.........
(50dollars per year is 3 dollars a week and assuming you drive a tank a week)

Hmmmmmm funny, there are those that buy chevron for mystery benefits over union 76 . (like me) and pay the same difference yet, for sure, the oils do react differently to high temp.

anyway, enjoy the wallmart bargains of mobil 1

Eh, Chevron Techoron is officially gotten the approval for its effectiveness, which they do add into their gas. While I do prefer non-additives gas (if I want it I can add it myself), but that is not an option here in California so it is pick your poison. =(

But yea once you get into high stress of track or a stroker, then that is a whole different story with the heat and our cars have heat issues to begin with.

So really:
Torco, BradPenn, RoyalPurple, Amsoil, Redline are the top oils for track and does good also on street.
Valvoline and Mobil1 as a secondary more budget oils good for street but not for track.

Same price here. I usually avoid Walmart at all costs but make the exception for oil in the spring. First Walmart was out of the 5 qt. jugs so I thought I'd buy the single quart bottles until I saw the $9.00 price.
I can understand charging maybe 50¢ more for individual bottles, but practically doubling the price is ridiculous.

So really
Torco, BradPenn, RoyalPurple is the top 3,
with Amsoil, Redline, Valvoline and Mobile1 as a secondary more budget oils (redline could be moved a rank, but I don't think anyone has really used it on the track so ill keep it as unproven under high heat)
amzoil and redline had no oil pressure drop.... mobil 1 and vavlone racing oil, seemingly turned to water! so, i would re-adjust your categories based on our tests at the track. I think all of the torco, RP amsoil or redline will work well. I dont think amsoil is buget by any stretch, at 12 to 15 bucks a quart!
I really wanted the Valvoline to work for scot, but again the oil light would come on a lot when hot.... amsoil, no issues, pegged at 5bar.
but, for street use, pick your poison as you say

Im glad this thread has been resurrected. The PO shows an oil change at 107k miles using Mobil1 5w30. I use this in my Avalanche its great oil for the truck showing almost 300k miles, and still running strong(knock on wood).

I am seeing an issue with the MY 90 928 though. At idle when the car is hot, and coming from a fun run i get an oil pressure warning light. Slight rev and the oil pressure climbs to 5bar. Sometimes with the AC on at an idle will do the same, and i can toggle the AC to get the oil pressure just above 1bar. Could the 5w30 Mobile 1 be causing this issue?

I have 109k miles now. Im going to change within the next few weeks. So Amsoil, Brad Penn, or Redline or ????? Are any of these available locally, or will they all be internet orders? Should i go with 20w50? Synthetic, standard? Lots of info out there on he about what oil to use, and there are so many different opinions.

30 weight is too thin.

Read the Owner's manual (downloads available in the "New Visitor" sticky).

5w-30 is only recommended for temps below freezing, at least in the manual for my 85.

Fanboyism over brand of oil aside (nothing wrong with a major brand like Mobile I)...if you look in your owner's manual, you'll see that weight of oil is good for -20º to ~30ºF.
That would be fine if the car spent its life in Northern Alaska. Personally, if I had seen records of prolonged use of that weight, I would have passed on the car.

I also noticed your signature. Does that car also have a supercharger? With 5W30?

Yea with supercharger.
The only oil change with 5w30 was done at 107k. I Have 2k miles since that oil change and will change it next weekend to a 20-50 oil. The supercharger was installed within the last 2k miles as well.

For street use

I really like conventional Valvolene Racing 20/50

It is nice stuff. Available everywhere, It Smells Terrific, and stays freshly changed oil looking

for many miles.

I put it in before last Frenzy and every time i check the level

it's right where it should be and looks as clean as it did last year.

My motor is in very good health w/ 66k miles.
