M1 15/50, which still has plenty of zinc (1300), continues to do well in my car despite all the abuse in the 122K miles since I bought it. No oil burning. 190-195 compression. Very low leakdown. But I'm real careful. I change it once every year or 15K miles. Just about due for another change.

Whether it needs it or not, heh?

I have been really happy with Mobil1 in my 944S2, but then I bought a whole lot of the old formulation when the FLAPS had a "1/3 off sale". When I run out, I don't know what I'll use.

...and yes, I know I could use my precious store of it in the 928, but it came with fresh Fuchs, and I stayed with it.

Running Amsoil 10W40 in the GT. As others have mentioned they have a high zinc formula and other addivitives for older European cars.

The regular non EP version is the one that is reccomended for the older engines that need the extra additives, so the dropping of EP shouldn't effect us. I'm running Mobil1 15w50 in mine and my 968 without issue. If you really feel the need for more ZDDP, there is a product out there just for that. http://www.zddplus.com/

I have been using Amsoil 15W50 for years in both race cars with and without supercharger since 2002.

So, to clarify, are we to use the M1 15W50 EP(Extended Performance)? How about Royal Purple?

Mobil 1 15W50 EP is what I've been using for a few years now in my 928 and 968.

The non EP version is what you are suppose to be using or at least according to the description on their website.

Non EP Version:
States: "Provides extra anti-wear additive for older vehicles "
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...1_15W-50_.aspx

EP Version:
No mention of extra additives for older vehicles.

But this was also taken from the Mobile 1 website:

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50 is formulated to provide outstanding engine protection for high performance engines and for consumers who want a higher viscosity oil and higher anti-wear performance ( ZDDP) than typically required by modern vehicles.

I would not follow what their marketing material says. A marketing team will say whatever they can to sell the product. I mainly refer to oil analysis comparisons between different weights and brands of oil. There was one posted here a month or so back.

They don't list the 15w50 EP on this chart, but the other weights have the same ZDDP level whether it's EP or not, so not sure what the EP benefit is. But the regular 15w50 is listed at 1300ppm for ZDDP. The chart is dated 4/7/09, so it's pretty recent.

I know this is a very old post.. To future readers Mobil 1 Racing has (Nominal-"at least") 1750 Phosphorus/1850 Zinc. IMHO that's how they achieve max protection vs power release of a 30W oil.
But golly.. you pay for it at $99 for 6qts.

"Racing Oils" do not typically have the necessary detergents for a street car since most race cars undergo more frequent oil changes.

Most if not all racing oils have always had higher levels of ZDDP since they do not comply with GF-4 and other standards intended for street driven vehicles.

I have a case of Brad Penn if any one in DFW is interested. Retail is $93, I'll take $80!
