Default 80 Euro S - idles fine but wont "go"

Its been sitting for a couple years - but run occasionally. Last time out it stumbled under acceleration but then cleared its throat and developed poser up to redline.

Now - starts and idles fine. Will gradually accelerate to about 60mph, but will stumble and ping if I advance the throttle to fast or too far. Does not sound like all cylynders are firing equally.

It felt like fuel starvation, so I changed the fuel filter - given that it had been sitting and all, but no change.

Before I start the long sequence of ground point and sensor checks; does this situation sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks

Mike

Well, I once used normal gas and had a nice drop in power at higher rpm.
(Also some bad knocking)
But nothing extreme...

Sparks plug are correct?
No vacuum leak?
Timing belt ok?

AGree with Lizard, check the vacuum lines to the WUR for cracks or leaks. Make sure they are hooked to the TB correctly.

I'm going to put my money on gunk in the fuel system.

I'd run out the gas that's in there and then run a tank with a full dose of Techron. Cheaper and more fun than throwing parts at it.

There's a hidden filter at the inlet to the fuel distributor. Looks like an double-male adaptor but there's a screen in it. You could remove and clean that.

Default Still Looking...

The hoses to the Warm Up Regulator dont show issues. I will pressure test them when I get my tester back from neighbor.....

I did not know about the screen at the inlet to the fuel distributor. I will get to that and report back.

Thanks a bunch guys - When I was working on it every weekend - I was a lot smarter. Coming back up to speed.

Got your email ... http://www.eurocartech.com/ is the place I go to have all the work I don't want to do myself.

Eduardo is amazing and honest! I drive from Concord to Fremont for all major services and most minor services performed on all of my cars since 2001.

Tell Sherry or Eduardo that I referred you.

Also since you are in Pleasanton, you are in the heart of the East Bay 928 land.

Good idle but no acceleration is also a sign that the piston in the fuel distributor is sticking. If the other easy fixes don't work, remove the distributor and clean the piston and cylinder wall to make sure it moves freely.

I'll ditto Dennis. Carlos had the same problem when I got him. Been sitting a while........gunked-up fuel system. When I did a flow test it was revealed that it wasn't getting enough fuel. Found a pump in the fuel tank with the broken hose connector. Swapped out the pump for a screen and all was well. Dennis was a great help..........Thanks again Dennis!

There also may be little filters in the output lines of the fuel distributor (at the top, unscrew the fuel lines). They can be removed. If the fuel distributor needs to be cleaned, I have a white paper I can email you. I also can recommend a great rebuilder.

These above screens/filters can plug or rust and deteriorated from water in the fuel. IIRC they were only put in the earlier CIS cars. If you have one at the inlet of the fuel distributor, there is probably another in the inlet or outlet of the WUR. They come out easily with needlenose pliers. If any have deteriorated and are partially gone, you may need to remove the relief valve to clean out the pieces.
