Knock Sensors - Early vs Late - Gold Pins
Can I use a 91+ knock sensor on my '87?
I remember reading somewhere this was possible if a certain type of coating was used on the pins, or is that nonsense?

You could use a dielectric grease as theoretically there could be the possibility of corrosion. In practise, little possibility of that unless lots of water involved. I have the gold plated sockets in stock if you want to bother changing them.

Well I can now confirm that using the older knock sensors in a new car with the gold-plated connectors on the harness side causes corrosion and connectivity problems pretty fast. I was getting an intermittent front knock sensor fault on the ST2 so I disconnected the front knock sensor connector and noticed that the sensor was changed with an older style and there was a bunch of gray corrosion gunk on both the connector end and the knock sensor end. I cleaned them both up, reconnected and fault no longer appears. I am not sure how long this sensor was in there, but it couldn't have been more than 5 or so years.
Thing is, if I didn't have the ST2 hooked up all the time, I probably wouldn't have noticed...
