1987 928 with vette engine
#16
I've seen chebby V8s in 911's, 914's, 944's and 928's. WTF? In the 914 and 944 it almost makes sense because you can do it relatively cheap, but in the end you get respect from nobody. And I gotta believe most of the time this is about the image. I'd rather have a nice 300hp six in the 914 or 911, or a Vitesse turbo setup in the 944, or a supercharged 928. Hot rods are great, but keep them real.

The fascination with this kind of DNA swapping is the costs involved with running a stock Porsche engine compared to the Chevy engine.
Buying a Chevy crate engine with good HP/TQ numbers for about $5000.00 or less with warranty is very tempting. Consider that currently there is no easy or cost effective solution to replacing a 928 engine for this kind of money. 928ers who have done this find they will spend much more than they realize to replace and/or fix their engine. Finding someone who can do a 928 engine rebuild reliably is also hard.
Not condemning or condoning, just discussing. I understand trying to keep the DNA intact and having a proper Porsche engine in a Porsche car. However, there is something to be said about marrying a very good, simple engine to a great body and chassis, not unlike what Mr. Shelby did with his Cobra cars that are now legends in automotive history.
The 944 guys are doing this with more regularity and are having a great time ripping up the tracks and keeping up with much fancier Porsche machinery for a lot less cost. It is my understanding that these conversions are slowly being allowed to run in certain events around the country in, if I remember correctly, POC, NASA and SCCA.
Cheers,
Constantine

The LT-1 will produce power far greater than the original 928 motor & getting increased horsepower from a Porsche motor would cost up to 10 times more.
Engine & Driveline expenses:
* 1997 Corvette LT-1 engine cost $2350.00
* "Renegade's" basic conversion kit cost $1325.00
* Wiring harness cost $575.00
* HP aluminum Radiator cost $895.00
* Sending units cost $70.00
* HP electric fan cost $425
* Special torque converter cost $360.00
* Flywheel cost $259.00
* Installation costs $6505.00
* Total expenses for the LT-1 350 conversion was $12,764.00

It's called Hot Rodding
It's not supposed to "make sense" and it is supposed to **** off purists. As long as the quality of the conversion is good, I love the idea just for the sake of doing it.
Calling these people stupid is on the same level as those who call me a fool for dumping all the money into my 81 versus buying a 32V. If it were about the dollar per HP ratio, I would have bought a Corvette 13 yeas ago instead of my 944S.
The whole idea of hot rodding is going things like this.
Like my father dropping a Ford motor into his 49 Mercury. In his fathers back yard using a tree and some chain as the engine puller.

Very well said.
Some folks just like to tinker. Just because it can be done or they're bored with the same car everyone else has. Personally I prefer the challange of squeezing HP out of the stock engine, but that's because to me, the LS-1 is the easy way out. But I totally get why it's done...like painting your shark Hot Rodz Flat Black with yellow graphics, a huge wing and canards..
Some of us just don't have any taste, but have tons of fun doing it. MY car may be a freak at the PCA corrals, but I gaurantee it puts more smiles on young kids faces driving around town.

Guys I was trying to be funny. Look at my car, I am far from a purist. Man my sense of humor must really suck. I will be serious from now on so as not to be attacked by the Chevy crowd.
