Thermostat Seal Removal/Replacement-Help Needed!
I've scraped all of the remnants of the old hardened seal (the one the thermostat seals against when it heats up and extends) out, but the replacement won't go in-it's a little too big and not flexible. I was about to try softening it up with a heat gun, but I just checked a few old threads here and apparently there's metal ring that also has to come out. I guess that would explain why the new seal won't fit. There's no metal ring with the new seal-it seems to be all plastic. If I pry the old ring out, does it have to be replaced? I didn't see any sign of one in the parts diagrams-maybe it's molded into the replacement seal?

the old seal is actually a metal ring that is wrapped in the rubber sealing material, simply get a screwdriver and hit the metal ring from the side this will bend it into the center of the hole remove it and then clean out the hole and insert the new seal

Here's one that still has the rubber on it and after it was bent with a screwdriver as Stan mentions. After you distort it enough you can grab it with some pliers.
