Does someone have broken fog lights for parts?

why do you want broken ones H?

Seems a little counter productive. I mean you have 3 cars you could just walk outside your house and use a hammer to break them

I have a complete junk set for an 84, but I'm guessing that doesn't help?

Hey Heinrich, what are you cooking up?

I've got one or two of the housings with plugs, no lenses. They're yours if you want them. PM with shipping details.

I have some lenses, may be pitted, but they're matching sets (striation wise)

John thanks ... no, looking for S4 and later. Rixter I'm sure you'll get good money for yours, I'm needing them for parts. Mike thanks I could use some housings, will PM ... actually need the light units though ... like I said, for parts. Mine mostly have the adjusters broken.

Heinrich - they are pretty much all busted...

I stopped trying to find good ones... pulled several from wrecked vehicles and they all had broken adjusters...

Plan A: I tried JB welding the adjusters back together - but they never last

Plan B: Cut the adjusters back and JB weld some metal spring material to the base of the old adjusters - let the spring do the flexing needed (the originals just get brittle and dont bend anymore)

Alan

PS You don't need very strong spring material for this to work

As Alan said...I have a bunch of salvaged lights with almost all of the adjusters broken.

How did you get this far in the thread without reading the answer ?

Cut off the remaining plastic adjuster stubs (they are brittle & useless). Get some spring steel - go to ACE hardware or similar and get some spring steel (buy a spring!). You only need one a little bigger/stronger than a ballpoint pen spring. Stretch the spring out straight (ish) and cut a section out - maybe a 1" or so (perhaps a bit more) - fold it in half - this is your new adjuster flex part. JB weld each end to the stubs of the old adjuster...

(Maybe curl the open ends & rough up the plastic to make a good bond - hence may need longer)

This is the way these should have been made - the original design was crap (weak) and the original material double crap (getting brittle with age is a poor choice for a material that must flex).

I didn't give the full story. A P.O. has had a go and there are some bits missing. I was looking for something as a replacement, rather than a fix. Just hoping that's all.

A replacement for what - the whole housing, reflectors or just the adjusters?

If all that's missing is the adjuster parts you don't need much - on the reflectors you can use a nylon nut/bolt instead and if the adjuster screw part is missing a nylon threaded spacer could be used (with some adaptation).

Maybe posting pictures of what you have left is the easiest way to suggest options..

Would this be why my fog lights are aimed skyward on my '88?

I haven't tried to adjust them, as yet. (Couldn't even find the adjusters with a quick glance.)

Ken - Likely yes - adjusters are the middle screws on the side only the 4 corners mount the face to the frame.

Any movement of the adjusters should move the aim of the nearest lens(easy test). Aux headlamp high beams (outside on USA) move up/down & in/out (in/out by adjusting both screws), fogs only move up/down due to very wide pattern anyway (inside on USA).

Likely they are all shot. They break anyway (all on their own...) but lots of folks unscrew the adjusters when they are trying to remove the lens (guaranteed to break them every time).

Alan
