Default Linkage Problems Out Of Storage

After being laid off and returning the company car, I took my 86.5 Euro 5 speed out of storage. It was last used as a daily driver in 2000, and since then, I've put on maybe 100 miles. I have been breaking it in very easy over the past few days.

The throw-out bearing chirps at idle or low speed, but more importantly, today I lost the ability to change out of 3rd gear. The shift lever moves freely about, and not within any sort of shift pattern. When the shifter became loose and free, I was going about 25mph, and tried to downshift. There was no forced hard shifting or wierd noise.

I'm thinking the chirp is unrelated to what I think is a linkage issue, and looking for your opinions.

Some other minor issues I've noticed are 1 window not operating, chirping heat/AC fan, fuel gauge did not register the full tank until the day after it was filled, dried thin plastic gaskets in door frames fall out, and couple of new pod cracks. One wierd thing was the passenger outside mirror. The mirror glass had seperated from the rubberized plastic backing and was on the floor. I was planning to reattach using 3M foam tape...any better ways to attach?

Thank you in advance for any comments,
Jim

Default Front rod moves

After removing the shift boot, I notice two rods connected to the shifter. The rear rod does the gear changes, and the front rod (i think) twists L&R, but should not travel forward and back. When I pull vertically on the shifter, the rear rod shifts thru the gears properly. If I push down on the shifter, the front rod moves, and the rear does not engage the gears.
Is there a stay to hold the front rod from moving ? And, can I get to it easily?

it sounds like the front shift rod has fallen off.
A a quick fix is to take a few screw type hose clamps and wrap them around the TT and the shift rod at the front making sure to install the cup on the ball then tighten the clamps so they are snug this will keep the shift rod on the ball and it can still move. You may have to remove the heat shield to have access.
The best fix is to buy Carls shifter ball cup it is a one time install and will last the life of your car www.928motorsports.com

Yup your front ball cup has popped off the ball.

I would recommend as a short term fix to remove the exhaust put it back on the ball and put a large hose clamp (5") around it to prevent it from being able to pop off again.

However I will echo Sterling's comment on the timing belt and water pump needing to be replaced pronto.
