You do have to keep in mind that I am trying to avoid the pit I fall into each time. So many while I am in there, might as well do that. I have a 928 race car apart for 3 years now and my M3 street/track car apart for 2.5 years.

I am tempted to check 2/6 though...

I used Plastiguage checking each bearing. I replaced mine with the yellow colored coded porsche bearings. (Porsche bearings come in three tolerance groups blue, yellow, red)

If there is no knocking or lack of oil pressure issues, why on earth would you pull apart something that is perfectly servicable?

Furthermore if your pan gasket is leaking, wouldn't you check that the bolts are not loose prior to doing anything else?

If it ain't f#*ked, don't f#*k with it !

Cheers Roy

1. Because the effort to do so is nominal when you have already removed the oil pan.
2. In my case the bolts were checked

Many people seem to have replaced the bearings or at least inspected them. Stan Shaw inspected the bolts. I was at a 928 technical day a local Porsche dealer lately where I asked the question if the rod bolts need replacing. They are stretch bolts. The 911 requires replacing them according to the WSM. The 928 WSM doesn't say that. The mechanic (a very experienced Porsche mechanic) told me to replace them. He may have said this just to be sure but there is no part# on the partlist. Any bad experience out there?

My bolt check was in reference to the oil pan bolts.

I don't recall the specifics, but the rod bolt (stud?) discussion has been gone over before and the consensus (as I recall) was they do not need to be replaced. Since the rod nuts are one time use, perhaps they "absorb" any stretch (guessing here).
