with the throttle plate in the closed position you want to hear the click as soon as the throttle plate is opened a hair, then it should click as it is just reaching the closed stop

Do you have the intake out or are you working on the switch in place?
Basically the mounting screws allow for the switch to be rotated a little and usually the proper position is with the top of the switch rotated toward the firewall. You can hear the click of the switch when it goes from idle to cruise. It should click after the throttle plate shaft rotates a few degrees...barely open a crack.
I found that having it mounted on the shaft with the mounting screws loose, throttle plate closed, I could rotate the switch all the way forward and it actually was trying to crack the throttle plate open so I rotated it back until the throttle plate shaft spring wasn't putting any pressure on the switch ie; the throttle plate wasn't being held open by the switch...and still had enough rotation to spare before the switch went from idle to cruise.
So, in simple terms, mine is mounted almost rotated all the way toward the fire wall.
