Default My new 928 Project

After visiting with Roger (of 928sRUs fame) and the other North Texas sharks, I went out and got one of my own. It's taking quite a bit of work, but I knew that when I got it for such a decent price. The outside's in nice shape, and the interior's not too bad for a 24 year old car.

I've been cleaning and repainting the engine parts. It would have been more impressive if I'd shown how bad they started out. It looked like three layers of rattlecan paintwork with no prep that had been set fire to. After three weeks of sanding, stripping and polishing, (and painting) here are what they look like.

Now I just need to rebuild the engine harness and rerun all the vacuum lines, and I should have a nice running car again.

Looks nice. Should be a fine car when you get it back together.

Thanks! It won't be ready for the shark breakfast this time around, but we may still turn up and visit with everyone. After 3 weeks of grueling razorblade, sandpaper, and dremel work, it may help to keep my enthusiasm going!

That's going to look really cool under the hood, those 85-86 cars have the meanest looking intake manifolds.

It's all that real estate. You almost have to take for granted that there's an engine under all that manifold

Here's a better picture my wife did for me:

Good looking car, I love that color! Maybe the next shark of mine will be blue!

Before doing these, I would have just told you a price! After scraping off at least 3 layers of badly applied burnt on paint on these (black, red, and blue?), I'll have to say it'd depend on what you're starting with!

First, let me get my car started and get these burnt in so we see how they age a bit. Being a skeptic of all the people who said in other threads that you have to chemically strip them, bead blast them, dip them in gold and have them blessed by the pope in order to get them to hold paint, I just used a regular etching primer on them, followed by high heat paint and a high heat clear, so they may not last well.

That's okay, even if they don't I have some very nice pictures, at least! If they do last, I'll try to agree with you on a reasonable price and an acceptable turnaround time (for the forseeable future, I only have about 1 day a week at home). I'd definitely feel more comfortable seeing how they age before taking money for them, though.

Thank you, and agreed! I thought I wanted a black one until I saw this color.

I look forward to seeing it! Maybe I'll bring one of my two-tone torque chambers, or whatever their technical term is.

Ugh. Having just been through this myself. I know you couldn't pay me enough to do this again. If my paintwork doesn't last. Next time I'm paying someone else to media blast it, dip it, powdercoat it....etc. I just hope the paint lasts. Looks great now though.

Oh, I will be following the advice of some listers here and pop the hood after every drive to let the heat out.
