I've not seen these cam timing tools before. Are there two in the set or four? Where are they available from? How much do they cost? Interesting posts.

Thanks,

H2

Yes, there are two separate tools for cam alignment. One for bank 1-4 (tool # 9226/4)and one for bank 5-8(tool # 9226/3). They are included with the camshaft removal/instalation set which includes two of the tool # 9226 cam hold down clamps. I borrowed this set from Rob Edwards. THANKS ROB!!!

I don't know how much they cost or where you can get them, but there are plenty of people on Rennlist that will loan them out. The Rennlist 928 crowd really are a great bunch...

Here is a video of the whole set in action:

I could be wrong, but I think the later models need three of the cam removal tools.
Or maybe it was Porsche used to sell them in pairs and then split them up and did not change the price.

There is a later tool number for the cam removal tools.

For the 85-86 you have tool # 9226 and for 87+ 9248. Best to buy them in a set if you are going to work on either or.

9226 comes with the two cam holding blocks, 2 rods that thread into spark plug holes, and two cam lobe alignment bars. This set ONLY works on 85-86 cars- For an 87-95, you also have to buy 2 of the 9248 holding blocks, as the 87+ heads have these sleeves around the cam cap bolts that are larger in diameter than the holes machined in the 9226 holding blocks. Originally I only bought 1 of the 9248 tools, assuming that I'd get a pair of blocks. But each one only includes 1 block. And you still need to buy the 9226 set in order to get the mounting rods that screw into the spark plug threads. Live and learn....

The small holes line up with a cast pipe on the 86-up, 5-8/left rear cover. One of the holes lines up at TDC#1. Possibly used during factory assembly?

The cast nubs indicate the proper direction of the distributor rotor tip.
