Collector or Enthusiast - what are you?
#46
We started out as enthusiasts.....not sure where we fall along the line now.
Hubby would qualify, I guess, for BPW, as well.
But I am probably more of an enthusiast since I can't actually do anything with them other than drive them....
But between us (as a single 928 addicted unit ), we are probably collectors. We have purchased 6 of them at this point, though, as I have always said, you have to buy 2 to make one good one.
So we actually own 3 driving examples, and have approximately 1.87 cars left over in the basement.
Does that make us collectors or just sick? Not sure. But whatever our definition, or current market values, or others thoughts about whatever sick thing Kevin has dreamed up to do to one lately, it doesn't change our love for them, or our passion for driving them to their fullest capabilities.
GREAT POST!

Great thread Dan - thanks for starting it.
I am definitely not a collector, although I do have a few different - low production cars. Enjoy and try to drive them all. ('90 Alfa Spider veloce, '73 MB 450 SL, '90 MB 560 SEC, '89 928 S4, '94 928 GTS). They are all different machines with different joys and "opportunities". Only the SL and Spider are in original condition, and very nearly concours. I make small modifications for my enjoyment - driving and visual. Everytime I look at any one of them, I enjoy the design effort that went into them, and especially for the Porsches, the mechanical/engineering talent.
For pure driving enjoyment, the Porsche's win hands down if the road is anything but nearly straight. The SEC is pretty damn nice as an "autobahn" cruiser, and with it's modest suspension mods is OK on the twisties (plus it's quiet at speed!!). Everytime I look at either the '89 or the '94 Porsche, I get a smile, as the design is just so "right" to my eyes. And, I have a smile on my face for the entire day when I drive the '89 on a wonderful track like Watkins Glen, Mid-Ohio, or Virginia Int'l. What a blast - not something most "collectors" do with their cars!!!!! Nor would any collector have "TONKA" on the rear reflector of a VERY low production car, only an enthusiast/waterboy with a wierd sense of humor: ('greatest toy for a boy').
Again Dan, thanks for starting this. IF you DO live in Lihue, we'll have to get together. We spend a couple of weeks there most every late summer (Arriving just in time to buy malasadas at the Kauai Fair).
Cheers,

I think it goes without saying that if we all agreed on everything this world would be pretty boring.
I learned years ago to appreciate everyones perspective on any topic and I make it a point not to cut anyone off when an inspired enthusiast explains their thinking.
For example, I have no interest in modifying my car but I know for a fact that those that do are only making our cars more robust and learning about the shortcomings. It would be foolish not to read and learn from them.
If anything we can all gain knowledge from each other and take advantage of what each of us has learned about the cars and our expertis.
My two cents for today!

Good to remember that the only difference between being considered eccentric or crazy is that if you have money you are not crazy. Same could be said for collector vs enthusiast. I still maintain that cult car is probably the best description for most ! The old very brown 1980 is a tool useful for it's function and when I am done with it it too will be done
