Default TB Failure, Any Cam Special tools I could use?

Well the bolt holding on the entire belt system came off the other day on my 1986.5 and I was wondering how to find the tools to remove/reinstall the cams. If any one in central Texas area group has any or has done something of the sort and could provide info that would be great!

Thanks,
Justin

...is worthless until we know what year/model 928 you are working on.

Some pictures, a location, and a hint at your ownership history and mechanical confidence wiould be cool. Although if you are already pulling cams you are well along the way. Do you have the workshop manuals or the CD set of same? Those help a lot. Maybe more than a lot.

There may be other folks nearby who can drink your beer and offer advice while you work. Or they might even help. It's been known to happen around here.

Wow, sorry everyone. I rarely post threads like that, i guess it was just really late and I wasnt really paying attention while I was shopping for valves and such.

So anyway, I got a video scope and found that about half or less of the valves are bent, I dont know whether to buy new valves or try and find a donor engine and replace the heads. I have only had the car (1986.5) for about a month but when I got it i did all the normal stuff such as new belts, water pump etc, I suppose I just didnt tighten the main central bolt holding everything tight enough. Well as I said it all went to hell when the bolt came out, the pulleys slid off along with the balance ring and the belt sprocket. I assume new valves are going to be around $500 but I just dont think I could get all the timing issues correctly dealt with. I know I could pull everything and put back in if I had those cam tools, but when it comes to timing I get pretty lost. Cost is one of the main issues right now while im trying to go to collage so I am trying to explore all my options... Thanks!

I would buy new valves, and the heads are going to have to go to a good machine shop if you want a lasting repair.
Bent valves are not going to be cheap even if you are doing the labor yourself.

Be sure to install the crank bolt washer correctly or the bolt will come loose again...the flat side goes forward somewhat counter intuitive and often causes the bolt to come loose. The engine will need to come out of the car because of the head studs used until 1987 pretty much make the heads captive. Plus the 85-86 cam cover bolts screw into the heads of special bolts which tend to break as you try to remove the cam bolts removing broken bolts from the head is difficult /impossible with the engine in the car..

I would love to see this bolt breaking phenomena in person. Never had a problem on my '85. Can't see what all the fuss is about.

Well I already broke the bolts off in the water pump, definitely the worst time I've ever had getting those out. Well I want to replace the valves and am super discouraged by having to pull the engine. Also I was told it would cost $1000 to get it timed correctly. Looks like my 2 month old car has already become a indefinite garage sitter. Crap

If you paying a shop, give up.

If you are doing it yourself, there is hope.

You will need to pull the motor. It is much easier to do it than work with it in the car, if it is even possible.
