There is a guy in Thailand who sells big "Brembo" caliper covers that you just glue to your little calipers. Anderson and Fan RACE with stock rear calipers. As I have said for years if you can lock up the tires and that is EASY without ABS you get little or no benefit from bigger brakes the tires are the limiting factor. All you ABS guys pull the ABS relay and do a few high speed 100 plus hard braking exercises you will see how easy it is to lock up a tire or two at any speed The old very brown 1980 and I spent so quality time on the track this weekend at Big Willow. With me and a student that is about 3,600 lbs running only the S brake setup (thanks Mark A ) I never ever felt the need for bigger brakes and that is riding on very sticky DOT race tires. My rotors are drilled.....I took a hand held drill and drilled them ! very easy the cast iron is soft and I do run Porterfield's race pads. Caliper envy is an ugly thing but the Thai Guy has a solution..... The big caliers do LOOK great !

ha ha ha, my 2001 Boxster S was lapis blue/gray and came stock with drilled rotors and red calipers. The ladies would often point at the wheels and ask what those red things were. The answer, "That means it has the hot rod brakes," seemed to suffice.

I really liked the blue/gray with red brakes and drilled rotors. And will probably at some point do drilled rotors and maybe red calipers on the GTS. But right now it would be too much trouble. I would have to get color crested center caps if I painted my calipers red.

I'm thinking that there must be a market for nice set of stamped imitation drilled rotors, along with cast or maybe even billet plastic colored imitation big calipers. Maybe just silk-screen the image of a huge caliper onto the stamped imi-rotor, that way the caliper image would turn with the wheel. Be the first on your block to have a set of these special giant brakes!

The muscle car guys have been putting a flat "Drilled" thin metal discs on rear drum brakes for a long time......what looks weird is the lack of a "caliper" . The Thai guy really is selling dummy calipers or is that fake calipers for dummies ?

I've seen plastic hub caps that were made to give the look of five spoke wheels and drilled rotors. Maybe those Thai caliper covers could be glued to the hub caps for a more realistic or upgraded look.

Since everybody knows that red cars are faster, it just makes makes sense that red brakes will stop your car faster

Agree with others, big brakes on the back of a 928 is WAY TO MUCH... Overkill would be putting it mildly. Even with the 45bar turbo pressure distributor you don't need big brakes on the back of a 928. Under braking there is not much weight back there anyway... that said the 45bar distributor made a HUGE difference in brake feel on my S4. That car stops better than ANY CAR I HAVE and as good as most of the cars I have driven (including the super cars from last Nov with their HUGE CCB's!)

The big reds for the rear are from the 993TT. The caliper must be machined (I think 6.5mm) to make the caliper center on the 993TT rear rotor. The parking brake will still work. Once the caliper is machined, its a straight bolt on job.

There are two potential down sides:
1. The bigger rear brakes moves the brake bias further to the rear. I was running a 55 bar brake bias valve and found I could lock up the rears before the fronts (not a good thing). I have since gone down to the 45 bar bias valve and all is good! Those of you with the stock 18 bar bias valve (all S4's, GT and GTS's) will not have any problems. If you have an OB your bias valve is a 33 Bar and IMHO you will also be fine.
2. The other downside is $$$$$. As I stated in my original post; the S4's and later don't need bigger brakes unless maybe a dedicated track car. BUT, as Chuck stated they sure look better in the big 18" wheels.

The pics show the old pads VS the 993TT pad, double the surface area. The old caliper VS the 993TT caliper and the old rotor VS the 993TT rotor and with the wheel installed.

Jim,

Totally agree with you on the looks buddy! They look AWESOME!

I wonder if my S4 bias bar is a 45 or a 55... I think we did 45 on that car. Whatever we did those brakes have always been the best in my stable! BY FAR! The race car brakes are not nearly as good but we were not able to use the stock vacuum power M/C on that car, so I figure that is the problem there...
