Roger ...........given that the racing belt is tested for 2000 hours and yet production quantites will be available in 8 weeks can we conclude that some quantities of the R tbelt are already made and are undergoing test?

If so, I'll be willing to take a pre-production R tbelt to avoid the 8 week wait. As you know I'm in process of working on many engine projects that should complete in 2 weeks

Just concluded a deal with Gates to produce the 928 "Racing" belt.
Thats odd.. last time I talked with Gates about the 928 belt it was going to be a big ordeal to get them in the same exact Gates Racing formula. It was something about the tooling being in Germany and them only laying up the blue racing belts here in the USA.

Sounds like you have it under control though. If it ends up not working out let me know and I will pick it up again on my end. Otherwise, put me down for a few when you get them in.

Malcolm,
There has been a Gates belt available aftermarket long before my time.
They along with Contitech and Flennor are OEM to Porsche.
As dealers we are driven by price and availabilty from the main wholesalers.
For the last couple of years Contitech has been avialable through the wholesalers thats why I have sold them. At the moment Gates are available.
I have heard some comments from some about stretch on the Contitech belt but personnaly never seen or heard of this from my hundreds of customers with the Contitech belt.
I have Contitech on all my cars IIRC.
The Gates belt currently available is exacttly the same as the one supplied to Porsche - from the mouths of the Gates engineers today. There is no difference what so ever. Sorry apart from it says Porsche and costs twice as much.
With respect to testing the numbers quoted are the difference between a standard belt and the racing belt - any similar timing belt.
It is about 8 to 10 weeks before the first belts will be made. Non are available as of now.

Malcolm,

I'm with you, don't think I want a belt that's already been run at 6000rpms for 2000 hours either...especially if they do it in only 8 weeks

Roger, Dave, and Travis,
Great work in your pathway to an improved belt. I have a lot of faith in Kevlar as rubber reinforcement. I was working in Kevlar product development in the early '70's, when Buick developed a car that had a small hose for fluid to the heater that could not be replaced without pulling the engine. That seemed unacceptable for a <$10 part! We worked with Gates to produce a Kevlar reinforced hose that was essentially a lifetime of the car part. Probably increased the price of the car by <$5 vs the typical rayon reinforced hose.
Ever wonder why the upper radiator hoses of the cars in the '70's and '80's frequently failed, while todays cars (at least our 928's) essentially never fail? Our hoses are reinforced with Kevlar!
I'll be there to buy w racing belts for the next changes - in late 2010 (and maybe at least one Porkensioner).
