Believe me... no way I was going to do anything other than take it off. That thing looks like a parts-and-spring explosion waiting to happen.

I have enough information to figure it out now, there is only four ways the one link can go, and I think it is symmectrical, so that narrows it down to just 2.
From the look of it, each "half" of this middle body-colored link is a different "height" and it looks like if you reversed it the door would open too much and not close far enough.

Looks like standard "gaskety-type thick papery-rubber stuff" put there to protect the paint mostly. It's about 3mm thick and without it the door might not be level with the fender. The stock gasket is cut in the shape of the screw-in hinge plate. Should be easy enough to cut a piece in that shape.

I see you have taken yours off, can you take one more pic from the back? (but only if you have it off)
Maybe I can see which way the back link goes.
Below's the best one I have. I really need a garage camera with a manual focus. The (clean) door is already back on the car.

That filler is pretty dirty. If I missed this in the last go round let me know, I have a few new tricks to get these areas clean.
Yeah.... where my foot-stomping smilie... Actually, the camera flash makes it look 20x as dirty as the naked eye. There are some spots in the pictures that I cannot see at all with my eye. In any case the best trick is to unscrew the two screws that hold the door to the body. At that point it's pretty easy to clean. A micro-fiber rag with a bit of P21S around a tiny blunt-nosed bit of wood and some Speed Shine to finish. Let's you get to the dirty forward side of the neck too. But, she's sitting here waitin' and pinin' for ya to come clean some more of her crevasses...

That last picture shows me exactly what I needed, thanks Dave.

If I get to the shop today, I will take some pics of it apart, not that very many are going to go down the road of putting GTS rear quarters on a non GTS.

Sterling and I are the only ones I know to have done it, but there have to be more of them out there.

Sanity can be fleeting at times, I just have to keep telling myself it is going to look great when it is done.

Sanity? I'm pretty sure mine's around here somewhere. I think I last encountered it in the vicinity of the rear main seal on my '89.

It will. You may not be sure. But I am.

Ugh. Where's the winter gone? Damn near spring and I'm still a ways away from touching Iris. The Inn's full for the next month or so. You wanna get in line for the HW car 'round early April?

I won't let it go to far though.

Definitely put me in for mid to late April. I'll PM you with a list of parts I'm buying later this month.
