Default Squealing Clutch Release Bearing...

Hi everyone,

The clutch release bearing in my 79' has decided to start-a squealin' when I depress the pedal.

Has anyone had any luck shootin' some lube into the bearing and quieting things down? or.. is it time to order the new clutch plates, bearing, clutch pivot cap, etc. etc. and throw a new clutch in?
Part of me thinks it might be interesting to "clunk" and some metal pieces falling with destruction of the bearing when shifting gears.. the other half of me says "that might lead to complete wallet emptying".

Thanks in advance!

Curt

BTDT. Forget about lubing it, all that will do is encourage you to procrastinate, and end up needing more parts. You're going to need, at minimum, a new TO bearing kit(with circlip, thrust washers, etc.) and a new pressure plate. Plus whatever else you find when you go in there. If you replace the friction disks, you should probably replace the short shaft as well unless the splines look perfect. Below is a pic of what is wearing when it makes that noise.

You might get away with just replacing the TOB, remember it is spinning at engine speed all the time.
Also consider replacing the pilot bearing, and check the stub shaft if it has small wear marks its best to replace it so it wont catch on the discs, use the Hi temp grease on the splines and if you wash the engine be careful that water doesnt go into the top of the bell housing on the drivers side (Left side).
Also consider replacing the plastic bushing on the ball for the release arm ( this ball/bushing is found in the previously mentioned hole)

You might want to look this page over, make sure you have the correct later release arm and ball, and consider replacing the RMS WYAIT. Most of the vendors are pretty good about letting you buy all of the parts you could possibly need for the job, then return whatever you don't need.

IMHO a worn stub shaft will be fine with worn disks, where people get into trouble is when they replace the discs and not the shaft -- unless it's perfect, and it's probably not.

If you don't drive it AT ALL you might get away with not having to replace the pressure plate, but the wear shown above is from mine -- it started shrieking 1/2 way to work, then I drove it home -- a total of 6 miles. Unless you're taking your time with the repair, you should probably have the PP on hand when you dig in.

If you have to remove the flywheel, replace the bolts.
