Evening Adrian................did you use sealant on the large Oring, bridge to block?

I believe my bridge is untouched since factory and had no sealant on any gasket.

Well, got the bridge out, did have to remove the oil fill neck.

And of course, one bolt broke, no matter how I tried to get it out. Went slowly, used impact driver, got it out about 1-2 turns, tried to get PB Blaster down there. It was the bolt easy to get at, there is about 1/4 in. sticking up from the head.

Enough for today, will try heat cool cycle tomorrow and see if can get out with vise grip. If not, left hand drill is next.

And everything was going so smooth.

Even though I replaced the two red seals, one side continued to leak. Re-did with adding silicone to the seals and it no longer leaks.

Evening Malcolm.

I know I definitely used sealant on the small red gaskets as I followed advice given when I was doing intake. I can't remember for sure if that advice also included the large O-ring - will have to search for the thread.

Malcolm, had to remove the filler neck just to get the bridge out. The 85 must be different from an S4, no way to get the bridge out without taking the filler neck off, like Davek said in post #4.

I'll try to heat/cool cycle the broke bolt to help break the bond. I made a guide to drill if I need to, slips tight over the broken stud and drill will slip down and will be centered on broken bolt. I'll post picture when I get a chance.

Yup, sorry, filler neck must come off. Broken bolts do suck, but can be removed even if you have to shave it even with the block, then drill and work some easy outs.

I don't put anything on the large o-ring that goes on the bottom. Takes some moving around, but it has a good seal (reason it's hard to get in). Do use some red RTV on the side seals, just in case.

Well, after an early morning round of golf, got around to getting this resolved. First tried heating/cooling with PB Blaster and gripping the broken bolt with vise grips, no go no matter what I tried.

Then I decided to use left hand drill bits, heating and drilling. Made this guide to help get perfectly centered:

Well, after the neighbors learned a few new words, this sucker wasn't coming out. Eventually, drilled out and used Heli-Coil. Man, it was like the bolt was welded in place. Anywho, all repaired, waiting for seals and, gaskets and O ring to put it all back together. Getting Shark Vent installed too. Should be back on road next weekend.

What's the vote on using sealant??? I never use sealant unless the WSM says to do so.

On the couple coolant bridges I've installed, no sealant, no leaks either. IMO copious amounts of sealant is.......I'll stop there to avoid saying something that might cause a moderator to accuse me of making personal attacks

Seems like every one has recommended sealant on the two gaskets but not on the O-Ring.

Glen,
Just use some type of water based lube on the o-ring and make sure all the o-ring seating surfaces are smooth and clean. You can even use motor oil, just don't use vasoline as it is a common mistake on o-rings, especially injector o-rings. This usually is why it is a pain to get some injectors out of intakes. Just think what Vasoline does to condoms and you will always remember this tip :-)

Never put sealant on an O-ring, unless it's an emergency fix and you will do the job properly ASAP. Use an appropriate lube for the task -- for o-rings that hold engine oil in, use engine oil. For ATF, use ATF. For the big one on the water bridge, "personal lube" is fine, you could probably even use coolant to lube it for assembly.
