Any Motorcycle Riders Here?
#51
My jr. high school buddies got into dirt bike (flat track) racing. I used to tool around with them, and almost joined them when they bought Bultaco Astros...the hot setup of the late 70's. Fortunately, I didn't have the funding to do it and never followed them in their racing pursuits. They got into racing the mile on Harleys. I only watched.
I must have known about 10 guys who ended up dying in that sport. Unbelievably dangerous & it takes a true maniac to race and win.
After college while feeling the itch to get back on a fast bike, seeing a kid doing 50 mph T-bone a stopped train at night was an eye opener. Being behind my brother when he crashed & burned on his old /75 reminded me of how dangerous bikes on the road can be (he wasn't seriously hurt - amazingly)
When the GPZ first came out, I hopped on one and found myself hauling *** on the street. I stayed away from that bike. A buddy let me tool around on his CBR several years ago. I was feeling extremely aggressive as the bike screamed into its powerband. I weaved in and out of traffic on the Beltway. I stayed away from any and all crotch rockets.
Probably why I'm still here today.
amen, brother.
I've only had less-than-capable bikes to keep me in check.
The KLR is like a tank. Truly a bullet-proof bike like a BMW, as you KLR owners know. A little like a 2-wheel Unimog...only a little faster & much easier to wheelie.
My current bike is a lack-luster ZG-1000 Concours. Another bullet-proof sport tourer that will likely keep me out of trouble for trouble-free 50k if I want... because it's not a crotch rocket, or a dirt missile (you know what I'm talking about, Carl).
I must say that I'm very intrigued by the last gen. Kaw. C-14. What a nice sport-tourer.....
Hey DR, why do I get the impression that you're partial to Honda?

When did you get that? That is HOT, the color scheme reminds me of the old days with my 84 Interceptor!!
Don't know where you got that idea... sort of like 928s, you get hooked on them :-)

I guess this should go here.
Todd, owner of "The Red Car" started many years ago with a motorcycle he built himself. This was his daily driver until he bought the 928.

If anyone is into Trails Competition Bikes, here is a blast from the past.
This is a barn find 1976 TL250 I found locally. It had never been ridden and was on display in my home until a few years ago. Talk about a time capsule, it was literally showroom floor new at 30 years old!
A former Trails competitor from that era that competed on one heard about it and made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

So David,
I guess the TL is gone? I know where there are vintage trials competitions, and these bikes are still viable competitors, in their class. I've even seen '40's rigid trials bikes at these competitions...
OOOOHH!
A 750 SS! I once had my eyes on an example for sale, back in '79, even then, it was $4800. I wouldn't be surprised if one got into that 6-figure estimation... D'you know what that verticle stripe behind the "D" on the tank is for?
JPTL,
I too, once had a ride on a GPZ... An '84 1100. Got up to 135 much too quick, in 3RD GEAR!!! Knew these were an accident waiting to happen... Cruisers, dirt bikes, and mid-size bikes for me, and I still get into trouble...
Thought about a Pacific Coast, or a Concours, for awhile... Still thinkin' about a Monster...

Yep...it was "clear" fiberglass (more like opaque) so you could see the fuel level. My work colleague is a hardcore old school Ducatisti. He'll go on for hours just talking about bevel cases, tickling the carbs, and all sorts of good old time ducati stuff...

The 750 H2 2 stroke triple. The frames were as stout as chopsticks. The brakes were for decoration only.
When the quirky powerband hits on those things, be prepared to hold on for dear life.
I remember this guy named Tony who had one that he commuted back & forth to high school. Whenever it was raining, you could be sure to see Tony lying in the road somewhere between his house and home. That guy was a walking road-rash.
Hey Tass, are there any bikes in existence that sound as nice as a Duc 998?

A large poster of this photo was enshrined on my room wall in college. Note the right boot toe (closeup added). Who recognizes the bike and rider? Probably the best ever.
