Default New Barnard Racer uses 928 twin turbo motor?

"The development car is powered by a twin-turbo Porsche V8 cranking out 617 horsepower."

Pretty cool to see them use a 928 motor.

Wow - that's awesome!!! A 16V no less.

I wonder if this group is tied in with the 928 body kits presented a while back, those were also from South Africa.

Looks a lot like a 928 transaxle notice the shifter linkage. The webbing on the rear diff housing. They just eliminated the torque tube. Sure looks like a fun ride. I wonder how the $100,000 plus market would accept a 30 year old engine and only a 5 speed ?

617hp, that's a little short of what "that turbo guy" is making on his S4 TT sharktuned and without trying too hard.

I also think this is cool. But let me get this straight... You pay about $110k and get a car with a used motor? Or can brand new 16v 928 motors still be sourced?

At best you get a rebuilt motor with lots of good used parts in the mix.

I know someone that will be a good sourse for replacement parts.

That seems kind of insane. Big dollar supercar, using 30 year old engine.
What is it doing for oiling issues??? crank, pistons, etc etc. is that block even 928 or something else?

from the pic in high res mode, it does look to be the 928 block, but hard to tell.

Remember this one?

Really cool. I'd love to make a street version of this with my S4 motor - since I'm beginning to know more about S4's than I'd ever want to.

I hadn't seen this one yet, interesting combination
there have been a few cars (mostly turnkey to semi-finished kit) the last few years with a similar concept
most I've seen utilized a chevy engine mated to the G50 trans, 1st I've seen a 928 engine, though I did mention it as a possible powerplant to a few "builders"
the G50 trans will hold about 600hp, a G50/50 will hold well over 800hp IIRC, though finding a 50/50 is near impossible and likely to set you back $7-12k
be interesting to see the final version

Sorry to dissagree, but I reckon that it is a 928 gearbox, 911 Gearboxes in this installation have the gearbox behind the driveshafts, as I recall. Also I'm curious about the advertised horsepower, 617 hp, I see no evidence of intercoolers, I would expect you would some sort of charge cooling for that sort of output.

Still, interesting choice of power plant/ driveline

Cheers Roy

yeah i think your right, i notice the rearmost part of the transaxle i can make out the G28 diff area. Looks like it goes engine block, bellhousing and direct to transaxle. The rear axle centerline goes right to the back of the transaxle, a G50 driveshaft comes out much closer to the input end of the case, not the rear part of the case.

I honestly question why you would use a M28 in an all out race car. The damn thing is HUGE, and very very heavy for a tubeframe race car. The M28 weighs about 550lbs, a small block chevy apparently is in the 350lb range. Cant say i suggest a 928 engine for racing......

I did also notice the BMW coolant reservoir
