eh...Ive been around the block a few times Erik!

Ive abandoned the fix i was going to try above. I just drilled open the case and found the real problem. This one will be tough to fix...may end up just getting a whole new assembly.

There is a VERY tight "tension" spring on the arm assembly and it appears to apply pressure to 2 plastic tabs. Well one of mine is completley broken and the other is cracked! Of course i wiggled the spring a bit and it shot off and across the table! Typical.

Ive got an idea to try and fix it...we'll see.

That's why you should do that sort of work in a clear plastic bag.

Just don't put the bag over your head.....

I anticipate your solution as my '86 has the same problem.

Tony - You found the "internal reason" that's exactly the problem I had, tried many fix ideas - my conclusion is its not fixable without a replacement part.

The combo switch for a GTS (or other Digi dash models) is rarer/more expensive - even used - so I bought a cheaper old style combo switch and reused only the pivot part with the in-tact wings. The 4 stalk combo switches have longer main stalks for clearance - so I swapped the GTS stalk part (slips in with retaining clip)...

Fiddly, & hard to get the HL combo switch reinstalled correctly - but has worked another 6 years or so without issue...

Don't hold your breath!!

Actually messing with it today, it is all but impossible to "repair" those cracked tabs with the tension the spring places on them.....I'll probably have to go the same route Allan did.

Fixed.

I was under the impression that the plastic tabs are normally "up" ,but from what i can gather they are forced "down" by the tension of the spring. All i did was drilled a small pilot hole then used some small RC airplane screws that i had sitting in a parts bin to secure the tabs and to keep them from twisting/moving.

Works fine when i tested on the steering shaft...

proof will be on the drive and how long it lasts.

The end of the black tab that is screwed down only has to make contact with "white" canceling tab inside the switch assembly to work.

As Alan pointed out..the tip of the white tab that is viewable from the outside, that strikes the tab on the steering wheel was actually in very good shape. My problem as seen, was internal.

Also...the assembly is VERY easy to get apart. Just drill out the rivets and refasten using new ones. Non issue in it all.

Thank for the help guys!

Well - good luck with that fix...

There is quite a lot of pressure on the tabs - I think it was a poor materials choice - spring steel for the wings (vs plastic with a spring) would have been better and more robust for the long run

Ive looked at it and i still am trying to figure out the purpose of the wire spring on the tabs? is it for feel?
Why didnt the just machine/mold a solid piece of plastic instead of that whole thin tab and spring assmbly? or like you say..metal?

there only needs to be a tab there in order for canceling mechanism to strike?

87s4 aut.

i am trying to fix my left turn cancel feature. my right turn cancel works.

i have taken it apart dozens of times. the tape does not work for more than a day.

i noticed that the white tab ***** on a slight angle , and the left side it does not **** correctly, ie it ***** flat. that causes no contact with tab of steering wheel.

somehow i agree, the spring functions are not working. i guess other option is to somehow lengthen the white tab, but that is in a difficult location.

When it sits cocked over to one side like that its nothing to do with the white tab itself - the wings breaking off causes that behaviour.

You will need to replace the parts with the wings - or repair as Tony did...
