radiator baffle & cleaning

I had a new side tank put on my radiator. The repair shop was not sure how the baffle should sit in the inlet. While it seems the open side should point down, he said he found it was inserted so that the opening pointed towards the side of the end tank (away from the radiator core). Since the search function is down, I am looking for insight into which way it should point. I looked in the manual first but don't find a photo of the radiator inlet with the baffle installed.
Interesting, my car was running very hot. I was hoping it was due to the leak in the side tank. The repair shop said the radiator was really well clogged with sealant, gaskets, etc. Apparently prior work on the car was done by someone a bit too exuberant with sealants. I never even gave this concept a thought. I wonder how often this happens...

I believe it should be such that the cut out in the tube (90 degrees?) has its edges set at 3 and 6 on a clock face (from the engine's viewpoint), so that the flow is down and right. The theory is to stop hot water going straight into the tubes and across, without going down at all. In my original tank that failed, there is a moulded ridge inside the inlet pipe to orient the deflector tube.....The replacement aftermarket tanks dont have this ridge. I drilled a tiny(2mm) hole through the tank inlet and the deflector tube and pinned it in place with a 2-56 screw, as I didnt want it rotating in use.

I'm willing to bet most 928's with a cooling issue has the same problem (clogged radiator). Unless there is another obvious issue like stuck thermostat, blown head gaskets etc...
I've seen radiators taken apart and flushed from 928's that did not have cooling issues. They were still full of debris.
Over 20+ years, any coorsion, gasket material, gunk that builds up etc.... is stuck in your radiator.

Ok, looking at it this makes sense to me, since there are two tips that could be turned in to hold it in place.
Did you drill the hole so that it would be under the hose on the outside?
Perhaps I can dig a bit inside the housing to create a point where the above tips could be turned in.
Most interesting is that at first glance I would suspect if the baffle were oriented 180' off, it could decrease flow by perhaps 90%. Unless the baffle orients itself due to the flow but I don't see that as likely.
I wonder if most people just discard the baffle.

I drilled the pinning hole right up against the ridge/barb at the end of the inlet pipe on the tank, so yes, its under the hose, and just goes through the metal deflector. The screw head is quite small, so I dont think it will hurt the hose, and the hose will prevent it from working out.
The orientation of the cutout in your pic looks right to me - one edge level with centre of inlet pipe, at 3 o'clock. Did your original tank have the locating ridge inside the inlet? My tank failure mode was the inlet tube breaking right off...

I left the old side tank at the radiator shop, so don't know if it had a ridge in it.
I think the orientation I have it at, which you agree, with makes the most sense. Thanks.
