Default function of this part?

This is from an 84 Euro, it was on the passenger side under the spider, it looks like it adds air to compensate for loads on the motor. It only has a two pin connector so i believe it to be on or off. In my process of converting to Megasquirt I plan on installing a GM stepper style idle air control setup. This will be a perfect place to put it.

I could blow air through it so i assume it is in the open position. I tried connection twelve volts from a small alarm system battery that i use for testing components but i could not get it to do anything.

what exactly was the function of this part?

thanks

Idle / air motor - IIRC it defaults to open.

That's the auxiliary air valve. It allows extra air into the manifold to provide a high idle when warming up. The electrical connections are for a small heater that heats up a bi-metal strip, the idea being that after it's had power applied for a while the valve closes. At the same time, the warm up regulator adds fuel. If you will have an alternate way of controlling extra air during the warm-up phase you won't need this part.
