I have AAA but no way am I waiting around for a tow truck like a bug on it's back if I can put the spare on, air it up and be on my way in 15-20 minutes. Last time I wanted a tow I waited an hour and they never showed. I had a spun water pump impeller on a 944S2 and finished the drive 5 miles at a time with 20 minutes of cooldown (I was only 15 miles from home.)

I also carry a plug kit and have used a plug to fix nail holes probably 5 times in the last 10 years.

A friend of mine recently got an M6 and it came with no spare... he is probably going to get one as he stands a good chance of someday needing a tire and with no spare he'd end up getting a tow for 50 miles to a town where they would probably not have a tire that fit his car or the ability to change it without making a mess of the wheel.

You are supposed to store it without air in the tire

I'm seriously considering ditching the spare now that I think about it, I already have a patch kit, and with some fix a flat and the compressor, many punctures could be readily fixed. Not a big fan of the fix a flat, but just another item to have as a precaution.

Insurance has roadside assistance included, but probably wouldn't be of much use if you needed a tire because it's doubtful anyone would have them in stock.

I found a subwoofer that fits inside the spare. Came out of a toyota or
something, got it on ebay for $60. I can get the P# if anyone is interested.
It's self powered so no amp needed. Amps are pretty dated in my opinion
anyway with all the high powered receiver units and self powered subs
out there. It sounds great.

Got a cheapo 12V compressor off ebay too, fits behind the tool panel.

For the multitude of things I'm constantly worrying about going wrong with my 928,
I like to be prepared for whatever I can be.

Guess it came out of an 03 Mazda Protege

Here's a pic I found online of the same thing. Fit pretty well
with some foam around the sides.

It wires in parallel with your rear speakers.

Buy really tough tires carry an air can and a tire plug kit. And sell your spare tire on ebay to pay for that stuff.

WallyP, Leslie, Nicole, Hilton and anyone else interested in the safety issue with my spare cover, please go back and dig the link in post #23. I guess you missed it the first time through, although this is the discussion that Nicole remembers somewhat.

BTW, does anyone know what force the locked upright rear seat backs can sustain before folding down? The spare is too big to fit over the seats, so the force will have to break the anchors or the straps (see post #23 for link) first, then collapse the seat backs before crushing your juicy melon.

The rear hatch anchor points are attached by 2 bolts? Are they attached to something strong in the body?
I think the rear seatbacks are only proped up by a metal hook in the release mechanism.
Someone's who's taken apart the rear seats would know lot better.
Not sure how much force the rear seatbacks are supposed to resist against as the rear seatbelts are the main restraint for the rear seat passenger.

Problem with a strong frontal hit is that the rear of the car may tilt up depending on what the car strikes.

I wouldn't rely on the seatbacks being able to restrain something as heavy as the spare Chaad. I remember seeing a crashtest a few years back of an ordinary hatchback where they put a couple of 18 kg (40 lbs) boxes in the luggage compartment. They broke right through the rear seatbacks, so definitely a risk to carry heavy, solid objects in the car. (I shudder at the thought of a photo posted here in the forum, of someone transporting a 928 engine in the rear of a station wagon )

Cheers,
Erling

Maybe it's only me, but when I started out driving, I was lucky to afford half bald retreads and a nine year old mustang. Not much changed over the next ten years, and I had more flats than I care to remember, and I got real good at changing a tire. So, my spare stays with me. Along with a $10 wally world 12v air compressor(the box fits inside the spare just like a real Porsche one, only in a cheap cardboard box instead of a fancy black molded plastic one), fix-o-flat can. And flat fix plugs and kit, along with all kinds of wrenches, spare liquids, clamps etc., I like to be able to fix pretty much anything that I can when it goes wrong rather than wait for the tow wagon. If more than one tire goes, well, then I will have to resort to phoning a friend to bring me my extra set of wheels from the house.
