Anyone know how to make the alarm go off? Strange question I know. I read the manual and it just says after the car is locked any attempt to open the car without the keys will set off the alarm. Well, the car is new to me since May '08. The lights in the door lock stems flash as though the alarm is set. If I just try to open the door without the key (i.e. pull up on the handle) nothing happens. Just curious as to whether my alarm is actually operational or not...

(hoping I don't have to jimmy the door to test the alarm)

Leave the window open, lock the door and after xx seconds (30?) open the door from the inside, see what happens.

Hello Aryan, mine's an 87 S4. I've been trying to get the alarm working, is there a light somewhere that flashes to indicate that the alarm is armed? I'm thinking that the alarm control behind the glovebox is toast.

I don't know from own experience, but not according to this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...f-you-can.html. There is some further info on a short and long key, maybe that helps.

I assume that you mean that the alarm didn't...

Try again, but this time reach inside and open the hood. Try the passenger door.

If one of these work, the problem is likely to be the door open switch.

Well, the door doesn't open 'cause it's locked but trying to open the door from either the inside or out doesn't result in the alarm going off.

Just to be clear, not sure I really have a problem. I've just never had my alarm go off and I'm wondering whether it's functional or not--I have no reason to believe it's not working...

Trying to open the door does not set the alarm off - opening the door should. The hood is easier...

That did the trick (just popping the hood didn't do anything but once I released the safety and started to raise the hood--I guess when the light would come on--is when the alarm was triggered). Thanks for the suggestion.

To test the door switches, open the door and with a screwdriver, engage the latch. Hold down the switch in the door jamb, and arm the alarm. Once armed, release the switch in the door jamb. Don't forget to release the door latch before you try to close it!

Good idea. Although at this point it looks pretty clear that everything is in good working order for me. My interior lights come on and off according to the doors being opened so that should indicate that my door switches are working.

Dan, you have proven the switches work by observing the light behavior, but have not proven that they are still connected to the alarm IMHO.

True; I guess I'm thinking that in order for the alarm to be set all door switches (drivers, passengers, hood, rear hatch) must be behaving as though they are in the closed position (whether they are or not). Once the alarm is set any opening of a switch results in the alarm going off. It should mirror the interior lights behavior I would think. I guess if there is a short circuit in the alarm wiring prior the door switch where the positive and negative leads were crossed that would bypass the door switch and give you an always closed position regardless of the door switch--seems crazy but then anything electrical is possible in a 928. I'll give the door switch trick a try and report back sometime.

With the doors closed, the line to the lights and alarm is open circuit, it gets grounded when you open the door. So, if someone cut the wires between the alarm and the door switches(in a manner that leaves the lights working) the alarm should still arm properly, but not trigger when a door is opened.

Probably no big deal either way, especially if you're careful about where you park.

Try this - open both windows, lock the car. twist the inside unlock **** for the door lock - does the alarm sound? try both sides. Its primarily the unlocking that triggers the alarm for the doors.

The things alarmed on the late model cars are the door locks, door pin switchs, hatch pin switch, radio frame L*, radio frame H, glove box, Expansion 1 L*, Expansion2 L*, Expansion3 H*

* These exist but are not typically used on production models.
