Which year 928 is equipped with air bag
Hi All,
From the wiki, only 1990 928 is equipped with airbags. Does that mean any older years don't have one? Also I notice a lot of 928 for sale is auto, is there any reason for that? My budget is only 10000, is it possible to afford a nice 1990 928?
Thanks

I am not sure that ROW cars is strictly applicable to 928 US. But, airbags appeared from late 91 model as they adopted the new interior as it has been mounted in the GTS.
For A/T; The fact is 70% of the production was 928 A/T. And that statistic is more accurate for 928 US where the proportion grew to 80%. Now, manuel transmission are more appreciated as collectors than 928 A/T. So, you have more A/T on the market.

Not sure that you can rely on nearly 20 year old airbag systems to work in an accident?
Originally manufacturers were quoting a 10 year life then some lifted that to 15 years & others later to 20 years.
It is not just the airbag itself but other parts of the systems like sensors.

Was unfortunately the same day he was saying he should stop tracking the GTS and finish his '87 5-spd track car..
Of course, that doesn't mean they'll all work fine - probably very climate, moisture and mice or other rodents/marsupials notwithstanding.

Airbags were introduced at beginning of '90 MY.
- All '90-95 MY US cars got bags as standard
- There were two early '90 MY cars for Canada without bags, all subsequent cars for Canada had bags.
- Drivers bag and possibly passenger bag too was optional in most if not all LHD ROW markets starting from '90 MY up to later part of '91 MY. In case just drivers bag was installed dash was still non airbag version without knee protection. These cars are very rare. Both bags became standard in LHD cars in later part of '91 MY starting from VIN 1585 IIRR. This meant dash had to be new style also.
- Just drivers bag was very likely optional on RHD ROW markets starting from '90 MY up to same VIN as LHD ROWs. Then AFAIK drivers bag became standard in later part of '91 MY starting from same VIN 1585. These cars still used non airbag dash up to last or very late '92 MY RHD GTS. RHD airbag dash became available at beginning of '93 MY and both bags were standard after that point.
- There can be exceptions to above ROW setups and change points for some smaller markets like Middle East or Asia.

Ah Yes ! But with a budget of $10,000 one needs to deduct taxes , license fees and hold back the obligitory 25 % for the catch -up services , unexpected new issues , "needed" upgrades I think most of us KNOW that the first visit to a repair shop , any repair shop , is an eye opening experience. For many that is the LAST visit as well.....
